Chapter 3 - The Bloodlines of Power

By morning, the rain had stopped, leaving the grounds of Moretti Manor bathed in a cold, crisp autumn light.

News of the cancelled engagement had already leaked to the press, though the official story was framed as a "mutual separation due to personal differences." Behind the scenes, however, the financial markets were reacting violently. Shares of Moretti Enterprise had dropped four percent at the opening bell, and the board of directors was demanding an emergency meeting.

I stood by the window of the grand master suite in the east wing—a room four times the size of my entire apartment.

Emma was sitting on a plush velvet ottoman, happily eating silver-dollar pancakes off a china plate provided by the head chef, entirely unaware that her innocent observation had shaken a multi-billion-dollar empire.

A soft knock sounded at the door before Marcus stepped inside, holding a leather folder.

"Mr. Moretti wants to see you in the boardroom downstairs, Elena," Marcus said politely. "Bring the little one."

"The boardroom?" I asked, nervous. "Is everything okay?"

"The board of directors is here," Marcus replied, his jaw tight. "And so is Arthur Cole."

My stomach flipped. I wiped Emma’s hands, straightened her little sweater, and followed Marcus down the grand marble hallway.

The ground-floor boardroom was a massive room lined with dark mahogany paneling and portraits of previous generations of the Moretti family. At the center sat a twenty-foot glass conference table. Ten men and women in tailored business suits sat around it, their expressions somber and guarded.

At the head of the table sat Alessandro, looking impeccably groomed in a dark charcoal suit.

To his right sat an elderly man with thin white hair, sharp blue eyes, and a face lined with bitter resentment—Arthur Cole.

When I entered holding Emma’s hand, every head in the room turned. Arthur Cole’s eyes burned into me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Alessandro, this is absurd," Arthur spat, slamming a liver-spotted hand onto the glass table. "You call an emergency board meeting and force us to sit across from a housemaid and her bastard child? Is this a joke?"

Alessandro didn't blink. He gestured to two empty leather chairs at his left. "Sit down, Elena."

I hesitated, but the quiet authority in his voice made me walk forward. I sat down, hoisting Emma into the chair beside me. She held onto my hand, staring curiously at the angry old men around the table.

"We are here today," Alessandro began, his voice calm and icy, "because Mr. Cole has filed an emergency motion with the board to strip me of my CEO title, citing 'moral instability' and 'breach of trust fiduciary duties' following the cancellation of my engagement to his daughter."

"You humiliated my family!" Arthur yelled. "You publicly paraded my daughter’s personal medical struggles in front of three hundred people!"

"Medical struggles?" Alessandro scoffed quietly. "She bought a silicone belly from a theatrical boutique, Arthur. That isn't a medical struggle. That is fraud."

"You have no proof!" Arthur countered furiously. "The maid could have planted that box! She’s an outsider! Who knows what her motivations are? Her late husband was a union agitator who died under suspicious circumstances on one of my construction sites three years ago!"

The room went dead silent.

I froze. My blood turned to ice in my veins.

My husband.

I stared across the glass table at Arthur Cole. My breath hitched in my throat. Daniel had died on a high-rise construction site owned by Cole Infrastructure—a subsidiary of the Cole family empire. I had been told it was a crane cable failure. I had been told no one was at fault.

"What did you say?" I whispered, my voice trembling with sudden, overwhelming rage.

Arthur smirked sneeringly at me. "Your husband, Daniel Vance. A noisy little troublemaker who thought he could shake down my supervisors for safety compliance cash. He got what was coming to him."

"Arthur," Alessandro warned, his voice dropping into a tone so terrifyingly low that even the board members shifted uncomfortably. "Watch your next words very carefully."

"No, Alessandro!" Arthur stood up, leaning over the table. "You think you’re untouchable because of your father’s name? You have three weeks until your thirty-fifth birthday! You have no wife! You have no heir! Under section four of the Moretti charter, if you fail to produce a legitimate blood successor, your voting rights are surrendered to the board! And as the largest minority shareholder, I take control!"

The board members looked at the table, refusing to meet Alessandro’s eyes. It became instantly clear—Arthur Cole had spent six months buying off the board members, lining up his ducks to steal the company the moment Alessandro turned thirty-five.

Vanessa’s fake pregnancy hadn't just been a desperate marriage trap; it had been the backup plan to guarantee the bloodline clause was met under Cole control.

Alessandro sat back in his chair. He didn't look defeated. He looked like a man who had just lured his enemy into a precise, fatal trap.

"You’re right, Arthur," Alessandro said smoothly. "The charter does require a blood successor to maintain voting control."

Alessandro reached into his jacket, pulled out a white paper envelope, and slid it across the glass table directly toward Arthur Cole.

"What is this?" Arthur growled.

"That," Alessandro said, a dark, brilliant smile spreading across his face, "is a certified DNA paternity report from the state forensic laboratory. Sealed and notarized two hours ago."
