Chapter 4 - The Sealed Envelope

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the boardroom.
Arthur Cole’s hand hovered over the white envelope as if it were laced with poison. He looked from the paper to Alessandro, then slowly turned his head to stare at me.
My heart was beating so hard I felt dizzy. A DNA report? What was he talking about?
"Open it, Arthur," Alessandro invited softly, leaning back and resting his hands calmly on the arms of his chair.
Arthur snapped the seal and pulled out the document inside. His eyes scanned the formal medical text at the top, moving down to the bolded conclusion at the bottom of the page.
His face turned from pale red to a mottled, sickly purple.
"This... this is impossible," Arthur whispered, his hands beginning to shake. "This is a forgery! You bribed the lab!"
"The test was performed by the Chief Medical Examiner of the State Supreme Court," Alessandro countered, his voice smooth as silk. "A man whose integrity even your legal team cannot question. Feel free to request a court-ordered re-test. It will yield the exact same result: a 99.9% biological match."
One of the senior board members, a woman named Victoria Sterling, leaned forward, her brow furrowed. "Alessandro... what are you saying? Whose DNA was tested?"
Alessandro turned his dark, intense eyes toward my daughter, who was currently drawing little circles on the glass table with her finger.
"Four years ago," Alessandro said, his tone dropping into a deeply quiet, reflective space, "before Elena came to work at this estate... her late husband, Daniel Vance, was murdered."
I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth. Murdered?
"Daniel wasn't just a construction worker," Alessandro continued, his eyes locking onto Arthur Cole with lethal intensity. "He was an undercover investigator hired personally by my late father to look into money laundering within Cole Infrastructure. Before Daniel was killed on Arthur’s job site, he brought his pregnant wife to a secure clinic in Vermont to safeguard his genetic markers in the event of his death, fearing Arthur would try to erase his bloodline."
The room was so quiet you could hear the tick of the grandfather clock in the corner.
"Daniel Vance was my half-brother," Alessandro revealed.
The boardroom erupted into shouts.
Board members jumped to their feet. Victoria Sterling gasped, clutching her pearls, while Arthur Cole backed away from the table as if he had been shot.
I sat frozen, tears pouring silently down my face as the world rearranged itself around me.
Daniel... Alessandro’s half-brother?
Memory flooded back—Daniel’s mysterious trips, his fierce insistence that if anything ever happened to him, I should apply for a domestic job at the Moretti estate where "we would always be protected." He hadn't been sending me to hide in the shadows; he had sent me to the only man on earth who had the power to keep his child safe.
"My father had a brief relationship with Daniel’s mother forty years ago," Alessandro explained calmly over the noise. "He provided for Daniel quietly, keeping his identity hidden to protect him from syndicate rivalries. When Daniel was killed, I spent three years searching for the proof to destroy the men responsible."
Alessandro stood up, stepping around the table until he was standing directly behind my chair. He placed a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder—a gesture of absolute protection that made a shiver run down my spine.
"Emma Vance is my biological niece," Alessandro announced, his voice ringing through the hall like a hammer. "She carries the Moretti bloodline. Under section nine of my father’s trust charter, a direct blood niece or nephew qualifies as a legitimate familial heir in the absence of a direct child."

He looked down at Arthur Cole, who looked completely shattered.
"My position as CEO is secure, Arthur," Alessandro said coldly. "And as for you... the State Attorney General was handed Daniel Vance’s murder file forty minutes ago. Federal marshals are waiting for you in the lobby downstairs."
