Chapter 8 - Blood and Vengeance

That night, the underground holding cells beneath Duca Manor were filled with the suffocating tension of final reckoning.
The tribunal was held in a massive stone chamber lit only by iron wall torches. Around forty of the syndicate's most powerful capos, captains, and senior soldiers stood in a silent circle around the center of the room.
Elena and Marco were bound to heavy wooden chairs beneath the harsh glare of a single overhead spotlight.
Lorenzo sat at a high stone desk at the front of the room, his black suit immaculate, his injured shoulder resting comfortably. Beside him stood Salvatore, holding a heavy ledger containing the full confession Marco had signed an hour earlier under gentle persuasion.
"Elena Duca," Lorenzo’s voice echoed off the damp stone walls, cold and devoid of all human emotion. "Charged with high treason, embezzlement of syndicate assets, and conspiring to murder the head of the family."
Elena raised her chin, sneering up at her brother. "You're a hypocrite, Lorenzo. How many men have you sent to the bottom of Lake Michigan? How many families have you ruined to build this empire?"
"Every man I sent down was an enemy," Lorenzo said calmly. "You targeted your own blood. You tried to orphan a child who had already suffered enough."
He stood up, walking slowly toward her chair until he stood inches away.
"You will be stripped of your name, your titles, and your assets," Lorenzo announced to the room. "You will be exiled to our holdings in Palermo, locked in a private villa under permanent guard. You will never set foot in America again, and you will never see a Duca dime for the rest of your natural life."
Elena’s face twisted in horror. To someone like her, exile and poverty were worse than death.
"You can't do this!" she screamed, thrashing against her ropes as guards grabbed her chair and dragged her screaming into the dark corridor. "Lorenzo! You bastard! You'll pay for this!"
When the iron doors slammed shut behind her, the room fell dead silent.
Lorenzo turned his dark gaze toward Marco.
The former chief of security was trembling violently, his eyes wide with stark terror. "Boss... Boss, please. I raised her! I protected the family for ten years! Give me another chance!"
"You didn't protect my family, Marco," Lorenzo said quietly. "You stole my daughter."
Lorenzo didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

With a single flick of his wrist, he signaled Salvatore.
The heavy iron door swung shut, and the sounds that followed were swallowed by the thick stone walls of the Duca catacombs.
