Chapter 4 - A Stranger in the Nursery

By 3:00 AM, the chaos on the estate grounds had settled into a tense, eerie quiet.
Using a secondary tunnel system mapped out on the vault's digital blueprints—a narrow service shaft built during the Prohibition era—Lorenzo, Emma, and I managed to slip back into the mansion undetected. We bypassed the grand staircases and entered through the servant quarters in the East Wing, heading straight for my small, private room on the third floor.
Emma had fallen asleep against my shoulder hours ago, exhausted by the terror of the night. I laid her gently on her narrow cot, pulling a thick wool blanket over her shoulders while she clutched her stuffed rabbit tightly to her chest.
Standing by the window, Lorenzo pressed his back against the wall, holding a damp washcloth to his face. The bleeding had slowed down thanks to the tourniquet, but he was dangerously pale.
"You can't stay here," I whispered, keeping my voice low as I turned away from Emma's bed. "If Elena or Marco discovers you're alive, they won't just kill you—they'll tear this entire wing apart."
"Where else would I go?" Lorenzo replied, his voice flat, devoid of its usual terrifying authority. "Every safehouse in the tri-state area is registered under my sister's corporate alias. The moment I walk into one of them, a silent alarm trips."
"Then you leave the city," I said, crossing my arms. "You take your money, you take your documents from that vault, and you disappear."
Lorenzo looked at me, a bitter, humorless smile touching his lips. "You think it's that easy? A Duca doesn't disappear. If I run, Elena takes the syndicate, consolidates her power, and hunts down every single person who ever looked at me sideways. That includes the maid who patched me up in a gardening shed."
My blood ran cold. "Are you threatening me?"
"I'm stating a fact," he said quietly, stepping closer. In the dim moonlight filtering through the window, his dark eyes seemed to pierce straight through me. "You saved my life tonight, Evelyn. And more importantly... you kept my daughter alive."
I froze. My breath caught in my throat.
"What did you say?" I whispered.
Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled photograph—water-damaged and old, but clearly visible. It showed a younger man holding a baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket.
"My daughter," Lorenzo said, his voice cracking slightly. "Taken from my private hospital suite four years ago. The nurse on duty disappeared the same night. Her name was Evelyn Vance."
The room spun around me.
Four years ago, I wasn't just a nursing student. I was a desperate mother hiding from a violent, abusive ex-husband connected to the local police. A man offered me a way out, handed me a baby girl whose mother had died during childbirth, and gave me fake papers with the name Evelyn Vance so I could vanish into the system.
"I didn't steal her," I whispered, tears welling in my eyes as I stepped back. "A man... he told me her mother was gone, that she was an orphan in danger. He gave her to me."
"His name was Marco," Lorenzo said, his face hardening into stone. "My own chief of security. He stole my child to use as leverage against me, but when things got too hot, he abandoned her with a terrified nursing student who didn't know any better."

He looked past me, his gaze resting softly on Emma sleeping peacefully in her cot.
"She has my mother's eyes," Lorenzo whispered. "And she thinks I'm a monster she needs to protect with a cartoon bandage."
