Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Vault

The recording stopped with a sharp click that sounded like a gunshot in the confined space of the subterranean vault.
Above us, heavy footsteps marched across the wooden floorboards of the gardening shed. Boots scraped against the gravel, and the muffled barking of a guard dog cut through the thick night air. But down here, beneath three feet of reinforced concrete and centuries of stone foundation, the world felt eerily isolated—a tomb filled with glowing monitors, blinking red lights, and the heavy smell of old paper and copper blood.
Lorenzo Duca slumped against a steel equipment rack, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The cartoon bear bandage Emma had stuck above his eyebrow looked absurd against his sharp, blood-streaked jawline, yet he hadn't touched it. His dark, piercing eyes were fixed entirely on the multi-channel audio recorder resting on the metal desk.
"Is she gone?" Emma whispered, her small fingers clutching the hem of my maid's apron as she buried her face against my side.
"Shh, baby," I murmured, kneeling down to check Lorenzo's wound. The white shirt beneath his arm was soaked through. The makeshift pressure I had applied was barely holding. If we didn't stop the internal bleeding within the hour, the mafia boss everyone feared would bleed out on a concrete floor next to an old potting bench.
Lorenzo caught my wrist. His grip was surprisingly firm for a dying man.
"You heard it," he rasped, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the small room. "Elena. She was the only one besides me who knew the master combination to the family safehouse network."
"Your own sister," I said, unbuttoning my jacket to rip a clean strip of lining for a tourniquet. "She's upstairs right now, isn't she? Sitting in the grand parlor, receiving condolences, pretending to mourn you."
"She’s worse than mourning," Lorenzo whispered, his teeth clenching as pain flared through his shoulder. "She's orchestrating the transition of power. If she realizes I survived the hit... she won't just hunt me. She will burn this entire estate to the ground to wipe out anyone who knows the truth."
I looked down at Emma. She was staring at Lorenzo with wide, innocent eyes, completely unaware that we were trapped in a cage with a wounded predator and a pack of killers circling above.
"We can't stay here," I said, tying the cloth tightly around his arm to stem the flow of blood. "The guards will eventually realize the trapdoor exists, or they'll trace the blood trail from the garden."
"We don't have a choice," Lorenzo muttered, gesturing weakly toward the monitors on the wall. "My security feeds show thirty armed men patrolling the grounds. Marco—my chief of security—turned coat. He’s the one who led the hit squad into the courtyard tonight."
"Marco?" I gasped. "He checked my employment files when I was hired as a live-in maid. He let me bring Emma here."
"Marco lets nobody in unless they serve a purpose," Lorenzo said darkly, his eyes narrowing. "Or unless they can be used."

Suddenly, a loud metallic crash echoed from the top of the stairs.
Someone was kicking the iron ring of the trapdoor.
