Chapter 5: The Collapse of the Empire

While the peace inside the hospital suite was absolute, the destruction of the Drake family estate outside was total and catastrophic.
Within forty-eight hours of Lucian's decree, the Drake Group was completely wiped off the financial map. The foreclosure on their corporate headquarters triggered a massive margin call from their institutional investors. When Nathan tried to liquidate his private accounts to save the firm, he discovered that every single asset had been frozen pending a federal investigation into the offshore tax documents Lucian’s team had delivered to the IRS.
By Friday afternoon, a viral video broke across Facebook and TikTok, captured by a local news crew. It showed Nathan and Chloe standing on the sidewalk outside their luxury downtown penthouse, surrounded by cardboard boxes as federal marshals executed a seizure warrant on the property.
"This is a mistake!" Nathan screamed at the cameras, his tie crooked, his expensive navy blazer wrinkled and stained with rain. "Lucian Blackwood is abusing his power! I am a legitimate businessman!"
Chloe was weeping hysterically beside him, covering her face with a cheap plastic bag as the paparazzi clicked furiously. The glamorous model who had flaunted her 'new beginning' on social media was now the face of one of the most ignominious corporate collapses in the history of the Pacific Northwest.
I watched the broadcast on the television in my room, feeling no malice, no anger, not even a shred of satisfaction. Just a clean, profound sense of closure. Nathan had built his life on an illusion of power and cruelty, entirely unaware that true strength didn't come from a glass tower—it came from the loyalty you showed to the people who trusted you.
"They're moving his final hearing to next month," Gabrielle Thompson, a high-powered family attorney Lucian had retained for me, said as she closed her briefcase. "He will be lucky if he avoids a ten-year federal sentence, Ava. You have absolute, sole legal and physical custody of the children. The Drake family can never touch them again."

"Thank you, Gabrielle," I said, looking out the window at the sparkling waters of Puget Sound.
Lucian walked into the room, holding a soft cashmere blanket. "The helicopter is waiting on the roof, Ava. It's time to take our family home."
