Chapter 3: The Price of Arrogance

The three attorneys didn't even look at Nathan. They turned on their heels and practically sprinted down the hallway, their polished shoes clicking in a frantic rhythm against the linoleum.

"Nathan!" Chloe shrieked, her face twisting into a mask of pure panic as she grabbed his arm. "Do something! You said you controlled this hospital!"

Nathan was trembling so hard he could barely look Lucian in the eye. "Mr. Blackwood... please. There must be a misunderstanding. The Drake Group has been a loyal tenant in your downtown towers for a decade. We are about to finalize a fifty-million-dollar expansion. Why are you destroying our relationship over her?"

"Because she is worth more than your entire lineage, Nathan," Lucian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He stepped closer, his shadow completely eclipsing my ex-husband. "You threw her into the rain. You left her with a few hundred dollars while she was carrying three lives. You thought she was alone. You were wrong."

Lucian reached into his pocket and pulled out a single sheet of paper, tossing it onto the tray table in front of Nathan.

"That is a foreclosure notice on the Drake Group headquarters," Lucian murmured. "I bought the underlying debt from the central bank ten minutes ago. You have twenty-four hours to vacate the building. If I see your face, your girlfriend’s face, or your investigators within five hundred yards of Ava or her children again, I will release the forensic audit logs of your offshore tax shelters to the federal authorities. Now, get out of my sight."

Nathan looked at the paper, his jaw dropping as his entire life's work dissolved into ash right in front of him. Chloe let out a sob of pure rage and humiliation, dragging Nathan out of the room as the hospital security team—now wearing Blackwood security badges—stepped into the doorway to ensure they never returned.

The room fell into a profound, peaceful silence.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for five years. The monitor beside my bed beeped in a steady, calm rhythm as the medical block finally took full effect, easing the pain in my body.

Lucian walked over, his expression softening completely as he looked down at me. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering my trembling fingers.

"You're safe, Ava," he whispered. "The storm is outside now. It can't touch you in here."

"Thank you," I wept, the relief washing over me in massive, cleansing waves. "But my mother... she never told me about you. She passed away five years ago believing we were entirely alone."

"She wanted to protect you from my world, Ava," Lucian said, a melancholy smile touching his lips. "My world is full of monsters and shadows. But she didn't realize that sometimes, the monster is the only one who can keep the wolves at bay. Sleep now. You have a big day tomorrow."
