Chapter 1: The Sovereign Shield

The armored Maybach tore through the torrential Seattle rain, its sirens silently flashing beneath the grill as it bypassed gridlocked traffic. Inside the leather-trimmed cabin, the air was thick with the scent of expensive cedarwood and the sharp, metallic tang of my own raw terror.

Another contraction rippled through my abdomen, sharp enough to make me arch my back against the seat. I let out a ragged sob, my fingers digging into the plush armrest.

"Deep breaths, Ava. We are four minutes from Swedish Medical Center," Lucian Blackwood said. His voice was a low, resonant baritone that somehow cut through the roaring storm outside and the panicked static in my own mind.

He didn't touch me—respecting my boundaries—but his presence was an absolute anchor. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, his dark hair damp from the rain, his piercing silver eyes fixed on the vibrating phone in my lap.

The screen still glowed with the text message from my ex-husband, Nathan Drake. The image of him flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys inside the hospital lobby was a declaration of war. He didn't want me, but the moment his private investigators discovered I was carrying triplets—three potential heirs to the Drake real estate fortune—he wanted the children.

"He thinks he can buy the hospital board," I cried, a tear slipping down my cheek as the pain subsided temporarily. "Nathan has a major endowment fund there. He’s going to use the clause in our divorce papers—the one about medical emergencies—to claim custody the second they are born."

"Nathan Drake owns a few blocks of real estate in this city, Ava," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his own phone, dialing a single digit. "I own the land the hospital is built on. Focus on your babies. Leave the wolf to me."

The line clicked open on his phone. "Marcus. Deploy the perimeter team to Swedish Medical Center. No one enters the maternity wing unless their name is on my personal manifest. If Nathan Drake or his legal counsel attempts to cross the threshold, terminate their corporate credit lines and have the city police arrest them for trespassing on private Blackwood property."

He hung up without waiting for a reply. He looked back at me, the harsh glow of the city lights reflecting off the sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw.

"Why are you doing this?" I whispered, clutching his gold-stamped business card against my chest. "You're Lucian Blackwood. You don't even know me."

For a fraction of a second, the icy mask of the most feared billionaire in America cracked. A profound, ancient sorrow flashed behind his silver eyes.

"I knew your mother, Ava," Lucian murmured as the SUV screeched to a halt beneath the hospital's private ambulance bay. "Twenty-five years ago, she saved my life when I was nothing but a kid from the docks. I swore a blood oath that I would protect her bloodline. I’ve been looking for you for six months. I didn't expect to find you in the back of a city bus, but now that I have... the Drake family is about to learn exactly what happens when you touch what belongs to me."
