Chapter 5 - The Federal Trap

The silence in the hospital room was so thick you could hear the digital hum of Leo’s heart monitor across the quiet space.

Damian froze, his hands hovering mid-air, his eyes darting frantically between the two armed federal marshals and Marcus Vance standing casually in the doorway with a thick manila folder in his hand.

"What... what is the meaning of this?!" Damian stammered, trying to regain his corporate authority, though his voice cracked pathetically. "This is a private hospital room! On what legal grounds—?"

Marcus stepped forward, his silvering hair and sharp eyes cutting through the tension like a razor blade. He tossed a heavy set of legal documents onto the foot of my bed.

"Federal Warrant Docket #4489-B, issued thirty minutes ago by Judge Thomas Sterling," Marcus said smoothly, his voice ringing with absolute professional satisfaction. "Charges include corporate wire fraud, securities manipulation, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit civil rights violations under color of law."

Damian’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed onto the metal frame of the bassinet to steady himself. "This is insane... my mother’s legal team will dismantle these charges before the sun comes up! You have no jurisdiction over private family trusts!"

"We aren't just looking at the family trust anymore, Damian," I said softly, finally speaking up as I lifted Leo out of the bassinet and cradled him safely against my chest. I looked down at my son, then raised my eyes to meet my ex-husband's terrified gaze. "We’re looking at the systematic embezzlement of over forty million dollars from the original Prescott foundation—funds that were illegally diverted to finance Caldwell-Prescott Enterprises using forged adoption papers and falsified probate documents."

Marcus opened the manila folder, pulling out a sheaf of printed digital forensics and bank routing slips.

"Thanks to the comprehensive forensic audit Amelia compiled and handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office this morning," Marcus continued, smiling coldly at Damian, "we didn't just uncover your financial fraud. We tracked the secret offshore accounts where you and Constance hid the assets stolen from the legitimate heirs of the estate—heirs who happen to be holding a very specific, undeniable genetic marker right now."

Damian looked at me, then down at the baby in my arms, and realization hit him like a freight train.

"You... you planned this," Damian whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. "You didn't just hide out... you were building a federal indictment the entire time."

"You taught me how to be thorough, Damian," I replied, my voice steady and ice-cold. "When you play dirty, you assume your opponent is weak. But you forgot that before I was Mrs. Prescott, I was a senior compliance investigator who spent her life tearing apart men exactly like you."

"Mr. Prescott, turn around and place your hands behind your back," one of the federal marshals instructed, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in the harsh light.

Damian looked like he wanted to fight, but the sight of the badge and the absolute hopelessness of his situation drained the last ounce of fight from his body. He allowed the marshals to cuff him, his head bowed in defeat as they led him toward the door.

As they passed me, Damian stopped for a fraction of a second, his eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of hatred and profound regret.

"Mother won't let this stand," he hissed through clenched teeth. "She owns half the judges in this state."

"Tell Constance her empire was built on sand," I replied evenly. "And the tide is coming in."

The door clicked shut, leaving Marcus and me alone in the quiet room with the sleeping baby.

Marcus let out a long breath, running a hand over his face and smiling broadly. "Well, Amelia. That went even better than I expected. The U.S. Attorney has already frozen all of Constance’s personal assets and placed a federal receiver over Caldwell-Prescott Enterprises. By morning, their entire world will be gone."

May you like

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders that I hadn't realized I was carrying for the past six months. "For everything."

"Just doing our job," Marcus winked, turning toward the door. "Get some sleep, Boss. Tomorrow, you take back your life."
