Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Confession

"Look at him, Amelia," Dr. Vance whispered, his voice shaking as he gently laid my son across my chest.

The warmth of my baby’s skin pressed against mine, sending a surge of fierce, protective love through my veins that banished every ounce of lingering pain. I wrapped my trembling arms around him, burying my face in his soft, downy hair. He smelled of new life, sweet and pure, completely untouched by the malice of the world outside.

"Dr. Vance," I managed to say, tears streaming down my cheeks, "what is going on? Why are you crying? What does that birthmark mean?"

Dr. Vance pulled up a rolling stool and sat beside my bed, wiping his eyes with a sterile gauze pad. He took a deep, shuddering breath before speaking.

"Amelia... thirty-two years ago, I was a young resident working at St. Jude’s Hospital downtown," he began, his eyes fixed on my baby’s face. "That was the year of a notorious scandal involving the Prescott family. Constance Prescott gave birth to a child out of wedlock—a son—before she married into the older, wealthier Prescott dynasty. To protect her social standing and her inheritance rights, that child was quietly taken away, hidden, and declared stillborn by the family doctor at the time."

My breath hitched. "A child? Whose child?"

"Constance’s firstborn," Dr. Vance said gravely. "The baby was given to a trusted nurse to be adopted in secret. But before the adoption could be finalized, the nurse vanished with the baby, terrified of the family's influence. That baby grew up not knowing his true heritage. He was raised by working-class parents who never knew the bloodline they were harboring."

He paused, looking up at me with an intensity that made the air in the room feel heavy.

"Amelia... do you know who that baby grew up to be?"

A cold shiver raced down my spine as the pieces began clicking together in my mind with terrifying precision. "Don't..." I whispered. "Don't tell me..."

"Damian Prescott," Dr. Vance said softly. "Damian is not Constance’s legitimate heir, nor is he her biological son in the way the world believes. He was adopted back into the family as a toddler after his biological parents died in a staged accident orchestrated by Constance’s late husband. And because of that adoption—and the bloodline clauses governing the multi-billion-dollar Prescott trust—Damian’s legal claim to the empire is entirely fraudulent if a true, direct-line blood descendant of the original Prescott lineage ever appears."

I stared down at my newborn son, cradling him closer against my chest.

"My son," I breathed, the realization washing over me like a tidal wave. "My son isn't just Damian's child... he carries the true, uncontaminated direct bloodline of the founding Prescott family."

"Yes," Dr. Vance nodded, tears spilling over again. "When I saw that crescent-shaped birthmark behind his ear—the exact genetic marker carried by the original founder, Arthur Prescott, which skipped Constance entirely—I nearly dropped him. Damian and Constance didn't just abandon you out of cruelty, Amelia. They found out through a covert DNA test months ago that your child would inherit the true primary trust, completely cutting Damian out of his ill-gotten empire. They engineered your divorce, your isolation, and your starvation not just to get rid of you... but to ensure your baby was born in secret, where he could be easily disposed of or claimed under a fraudulent guardianship before anyone knew the truth."

The room spun. All the puzzle pieces of my marriage, my sudden abandonment, the frozen bank accounts, and the chilling emails clicked into a devastating, crystal-clear picture.

They hadn't just discarded me. They had tried to erase my son before he drew his first breath.

And now, he was safely in my arms.
