Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

By midnight, the snowstorm outside had escalated into a full-blown blizzard, howling against the reinforced glass of my private recovery room on the sixth floor of the hospital.
My son—whom I had quietly named Leo, meaning lion, because he had fought his way into the world against impossible odds—was sleeping peacefully in clear plastic bassinet beside my bed.
I was awake, propped up against the pillows, my mind racing at a million miles an hour. Dr. Vance had sworn an absolute medical oath to keep what he knew confidential for now, but he had also helped me secure my hospital room under an alias, locking down my medical records and barring all visitors.
We knew the Prescotts would find out. A birth at Omaha General generates electronic records that eventually ping central health databases. It was only a matter of time before Damian or Constance caught wind of Leo’s arrival.
Suddenly, the electronic chime on my room’s private door signaled an override.
My muscles tensed instantly. I reached over to the bedside table, my hand closing firmly around my phone, ready to dial security or call Dr. Vance directly.
The heavy oak door slowly swung open.
A tall figure stepped out of the dimly lit hallway, shaking snowflakes off the shoulders of a dark overcoat.
It wasn't a nurse. It wasn't a security guard.
It was Damian Prescott.
He looked different than he had on the day he handed me the divorce papers. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were wild with a desperate, panicked frenzy. The cold arrogance that usually defined his posture had been replaced by raw, unadulterated terror.
He didn't knock. He didn't ask for permission. He stepped fully into the room, letting the door click shut behind him with a heavy, ominous thud.
"Amelia," Damian breathed heavily, his chest rising and falling as he stared at me across the dim room. "Thank God... I finally found you."
I didn't move. I kept my posture rigid, sitting tall against the pillows, my gaze as cold and sharp as the ice outside.
"How did you find me, Damian?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm, devoid of any warmth or fear. "Dr. Vance put this room under total privacy lockdown."
Damian took a step forward, holding his hands up placatingly, though his eyes darted nervously toward the bassinet where Leo was sleeping.
"Amelia, please... drop the anger," he pleaded, his voice cracking with feigned emotion. "Mother told me what happened. She heard rumors from a nurse at another branch. When I realized you were in labor alone during this blizzard, I went crazy. I drove to every hospital in the city until I found you."
A dry, humorless laugh escaped my lips. "You drove to every hospital because you were worried about me? Or because your mother realized that if my baby was born alive and healthy, your entire billion-dollar house of cards would instantly collapse into dust?"
Damian flinched as if he had been physically struck. The mask of a concerned ex-husband vanished in an instant, replaced by the cold, calculating predator I had foolishly married six years ago.
He stepped closer to the bassinet, peering down at the sleeping infant.
"So, you know," Damian whispered, his voice dropping into a harsh, venomous hiss. "The doctor talked."
"He didn't have to," I replied, my hand sliding under the blanket to grip the encrypted flash drive resting safely in my pocket. "The legal documents and forensic records I pulled weeks ago already told me everything I needed to know about your fraudulent adoption, your mother's corporate crimes, and why you were so desperate to strip me of my rights before my son took his first breath."
Damian’s face turned white as a sheet. He lunged toward the bassinet, reaching out a trembling hand.
"Give me the child, Amelia," Damian demanded, his voice trembling with desperation. "You can't raise him alone. You have nothing! You’re broke, you’re ruined, and if you fight us, my mother will bury you so deep in federal courtrooms you’ll never see daylight again. Hand him over, sign the surrender papers, and I’ll make sure you walk away with enough money to disappear."
Before his fingers could even graze the edge of the bassinet, the door behind him flew wide open.
"Step away from the bed, Mr. Prescott," a deep, authoritative voice commanded.
May you like
Two armed federal marshals, flanked by Marcus Vance—my former senior partner from Apex Legal Solutions—stepped into the room, their badges gleaming brightly under the hospital lights.
Damian spun around in absolute horror, realizing he had walked straight into a federal trap.
