Chapter 7 - The Healing Season

Six months passed like a golden dream.
The dark storm that had threatened to destroy my life was completely replaced by peace, laughter, and overwhelming love.
Derek was sentenced to three years in federal prison, and Brittany was ordered to pay full restitution while serving probation for financial conspiracy. The stolen $250,000 was returned to my private account, which I immediately transferred into a college trust fund for little Aria.
Aria was now seven months old—a chubby, glowing baby with bright blue eyes, soft giggles, and dark hair that curled around her ears.
Every evening, Luca would return home from his corporate office, shed his sharp suit jacket, and sit on the soft rug in the nursery, letting Aria pull on his silk ties while he read her Italian children's books in a soft, rumbling voice.
I stood in the doorway of the nursery one rainy autumn evening, holding two cups of hot chocolate, watching them play.
"She called me Dada today," Luca said softly, looking up at me with eyes so full of pride and tenderness that my heart practically melted.
I walked over, setting the cups on the side table, and sat down on the rug beside him. "She knows who loves her, Luca."
Luca reached out, taking my hand in his, his thumb softly tracing the knuckles of my fingers.
"Emma," Luca murmured, his voice dropping into a serious, intimate tone. "When I signed that birth certificate seven months ago, I did it to protect a child. But every day since then... watching you rebuild your life, watching your strength, your kindness, your grace..."
He paused, looking deep into my eyes.
"I realized that I didn't just fall in love with the idea of protecting you," Luca whispered. "I fell in love with you."

My breath caught in my throat. The scars of Derek’s betrayal vanished completely, replaced by a radiant, soaring joy.
"I love you too, Luca," I whispered, leaning in as his lips met mine in a deep, breathtaking kiss that sealed our souls together.
