Chapter 4 - The Arraignment

At 10:00 AM the following morning, the United States District Court in downtown Boston was packed with news media, federal marshals, and high-society observers.
The story had exploded across national news outlets overnight: BILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE DYNASTY ARRESTED IN FEDERAL RACKETEERING AND DOMESTIC ABUSE BUST.
Inside the courtroom, Julian, Arthur, and Miriam Thorne sat at the defense table. They were no longer wearing silk robes or tailored designer suits. They wore orange federal inmate jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy iron chains.
Julian looked hollow-eyed and pale, his polished demeanor completely vanished. Miriam was weeping silently into a paper towel, while Arthur sat with his jaw clenched, staring frantically at his high-priced defense attorney, Richard Vance (no relation to Marcus).
The double doors at the back of the courtroom opened.
I walked down the center aisle, guiding Audrey by the arm. She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress, her wrist in a neat black splint, her bruised face held high. She didn't look like a victim hiding in the dark. She looked like a survivor walking into the light.
When Julian saw Audrey walk into the courtroom, he flinched as if he had been struck. He leaned toward his attorney, whispering frantically, but his lawyer simply shook his head with a look of total defeat.
"All rise!" the bailiff announced as Federal District Judge Raymond Hayes took the bench.
Judge Hayes was a legendary jurist known for his zero-tolerance policy toward public corruption and corporate predation. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the thick indictment file before him.
"We are here for the arraignment and bail hearing in United States v. Julian Thorne, Arthur Thorne, and Miriam Thorne," Judge Hayes stated, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Federal prosecutors have submitted forty-eight counts of bank fraud, identity theft, racketeering, and civil rights violations. Counsel, how do your clients plead?"
Arthur’s lead attorney stood up, sweating through his expensive collar. "Your Honor, my clients plead not guilty to all counts. We request immediate release on bail. Mr. Arthur Thorne is a prominent community leader and a man of substantial means—"
"Mr. Thorne's means have been completely frozen by federal asset forfeiture orders as of 6:00 AM this morning, counselor," Judge Hayes interrupted coldly.
The attorney swallowed hard. "Your Honor... surely a reasonable bond can be established—"
"Counselor," Judge Hayes leaned forward, his eyes burning with absolute authority. "I have reviewed the physical evidence submitted by the State Police and the Assistant U.S. Attorney. I have reviewed the recorded emergency audio from the night of the arrest. I have viewed photographs of the physical injuries inflicted upon Mrs. Audrey Thorne."
Judge Hayes slammed his heavy wooden gavel down once. THUD.
"The defendants represent a severe, unmitigated danger to the community, an extreme flight risk, and an ongoing threat to a federal witness," Judge Hayes declared loudly. "Bail is DENIED. The defendants will remain in federal custody without bond pending trial."
"Your Honor! Please!" Miriam shrieked from the defense table, breaking into hysterical sob. "You can't do this! We are the Thornes!"
"Take the prisoners down," Judge Hayes ordered flatly, without granting her a second glance.
Federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Julian and Arthur by their chained arms. As Julian was dragged past our row, he looked directly at Audrey, his lips trembling with pathetic desperation.
"Audrey... please..." Julian choked out, tears spilling down his pale cheeks. "Tell them... tell them we can work this out! I love you!"

Audrey looked into the eyes of the man who had tried to destroy her life, her voice calm, clear, and steady.
"Goodbye, Julian," Audrey said softly.
