Chapter 2 - What Was Hidden in the Dark

The room smelled of stale air, copper, and fear.

Audrey was on the floor beside the overturned bed, clutching her wrist against her ribs. Her dark hair was matted with rain, her face pale, and a deep, angry purple bruise was already blooming along her left jawline. Her clothes were torn at the shoulder, where Julian had dragged her.

The moment her brown eyes met mine, the terrifying composure she had maintained broke completely.

"Dad..." she sobbed, her voice a ragged, desperate whisper.

I dropped to my knees, gathering her fragile frame into my arms. I wrapped her tightly against my chest, feeling her whole body trembling violently against me.

"I've got you, baby," I whispered into her hair, my own eyes burning with tears I refused to let fall. "I've got you. Nobody is ever touching you again."

"He took my phone... he locked me in..." Audrey sobbed into my shoulder, her fingers clutching my jacket with a white-knuckled grip. "I found his ledger, Dad. The offshore accounts... the money his father was laundering. When I told him I was leaving and taking the files to the prosecutor... he hit me. He tried to force me to sign a mental competency waiver..."

I pulled back gently, looking into my daughter's bruised, beautiful face. The anger inside me burned hotter than a furnace, but my voice remained calm.

"Where are the files, Audrey?"

Audrey reached into her torn jacket pocket and pulled out a small, metallic silver flash drive. "I hid it in my coat before he grabbed me. It has everything, Dad. The bribery receipts, the local judge they paid off, the shell companies..."

Footsteps rushed up the stairs behind us. Lead Detective Marcus Vance—my former second-in-command from the Attorney General’s division—stepped into the doorway, his tactical vest glowing with state police patches. He took one look at Audrey’s face and cursed under his breath.

"Medical team is downstairs, Jim," Marcus said quietly, kneeling beside us. "We’ve secured the suspects. Julian, Arthur, and Miriam are all in cuffs downstairs."

"Marcus," I said, my voice deadpan as I helped Audrey stand up slowly. "The Thorne family didn't just commit domestic battery tonight. They’ve been operating a systemic money-laundering racketeering scheme."

I handed him the silver flash drive.

Marcus looked at the drive, a cold, lethal smile spreading across his face. "You mean the same racketeering scheme our division has been quietly trying to pin on Arthur Thorne for the last three years?"

"The very same," I said, putting my arm around Audrey's shoulders to support her weight as we walked out of the room. "The Thornes thought they owned this county, Marcus. It’s time to show them who owns the law."
