Chapter 3 - The Wall of Silence

By 3:00 AM, the emergency room at St. Jude’s Medical Center was locked down under tight state police security.

Audrey was resting in a private room on the fourth floor. The medical exam revealed a hairline fracture in her wrist, severe soft-tissue bruising on her face and shoulder, and signs of prolonged emotional trauma. But she was safe. A state trooper was stationed inside her room, and two more stood outside the door.

Downstairs in the private waiting area, I sat with Marcus, sipping black coffee that tasted like battery acid.

"Arthur’s lawyers are already swarming the county jail," Marcus reported, throwing a thick folder onto the table between us. "The local district attorney—a guy named Thomas Blake—called my personal cell phone twenty minutes ago. He tried to order me to release Julian on personal recognizance, claiming this was a 'misunderstanding between spouses.'"

I set my coffee cup down with a heavy click. "Blake received a fifty-thousand-dollar campaign contribution from Arthur Thorne’s real estate firm six months ago."

"I know," Marcus grinned coldly. "Which is why I didn't tell Blake that I transferred all three Thornes out of the county jail at 2:00 AM. They are currently sitting in the Federal Holding Facility in Boston, under federal civil rights and racketeering holds."

"Good," I said. "What about the flash drive?"

"Our cyber-forensics team decrypted it an hour ago," Marcus’s tone turned deadly serious. "Jim... it’s worse than we thought. Julian wasn't just laundering his father’s money. He was using Audrey’s personal identity, her name, and her forged signature as the primary managing director of five offshore shell corporations in Panama."

My blood ran cold. "They were setting her up to take the fall."

"If the IRS or federal prosecutors ever caught on to the money laundering," Marcus explained, "Arthur and Julian had framed Audrey so cleanly that she would have faced twenty years in federal prison while they walked away clean. That’s why she was kept isolated in that mansion. That’s why Julian attacked her tonight—she discovered the forged signatures."

The door to the waiting room opened, and a sharp, well-dressed woman in her late forties stepped inside. She carried a leather briefcase and possessed the cold, unshakeable aura of a federal prosecutor who didn't lose cases.

"Jim Bennett?" she asked, walking toward us.

"I'm Jim," I stood up.

"I'm Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Jenkins," she said, shaking my hand with a firm grip. "Detective Vance sent me the digital evidence package forty-five minutes ago. I took the liberty of waking up a federal magistrate judge."

She opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick document stamped with the official seal of the United States District Court.

"We have issued a multi-count federal indictment against Julian, Arthur, and Miriam Thorne," Ms. Jenkins announced. "Charges include Federal Bank Fraud, Interstate Wire Fraud, Forgery, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Deprivation of Rights under Color of Law. Their assets, bank accounts, and real estate holdings have been frozen effective immediately."

She looked up at me with a look of fierce respect.

"Mr. Bennett, your son-in-law thought he was buying a local empire," Jenkins said softly. "By sunrise, he won't even own the shoes on his feet."
