Chapter 1 - The Breach at the Porch

The muffled scream hanging in the rain-soaked night air was the only permission I needed.
Julian Thorne saw the sudden shift in my eyes a fraction of a second too late. He raised the wooden baseball bat, bringing it down in a vicious, arc intended to shatter my collarbone. But he was an arrogant rich boy who had never been hit back in his life; I was a veteran who spent a decade bringing down armed cartels and violent politicians.
I stepped inside the arc, closing the distance instantly. My left hand caught his wrist, redirecting the momentum of the bat into the cold marble pillar beside us. Before the wood even clattered against the stone, my right palm struck Julian’s sternum with the full weight of my body behind it.
The breath exploded from his lungs in a wet gasp. He dropped to his knees, clutching his chest, coughing uncontrollably on the slick steps.
"Julian!" Miriam shrieked, taking a terrified step backward into the grand foyer.
His father, Arthur, dropped his glass of bourbon. The crystal shattered on the polished hardwood, amber liquid spreading like a stain. Arthur reached frantically into the pocket of his silk robe, pulling out a small snub-nosed revolver.
"Get off my property, you low-class bastard!" Arthur yelled, his hand shaking violently as he aimed the barrel at my chest. "I will shoot you! The police in this town work for me!"
I didn't blink. I didn't reach for a weapon. I simply lifted my left hand, displaying the phone screen facing him. The screen glowed with a live, real-time satellite telemetry map and a flashing red audio spectrum wave.
"That gun is registered to your corporate security firm, Arthur," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifying, steady whisper. "And right now, four tactical units from the State Police Special Investigations Division are watching this driveway through a thermal drone hovering thirty feet above your roof."
Arthur froze, his face draining of all color.
"You think this town's corrupt local police chief can protect you from a Federal Civil Rights Emergency Warrant?" I asked, taking one slow, heavy step across the threshold into their home. "Your son just admitted to domestic battery on a recorded line. Your wife just admitted to unlawful restraint. And you are currently pointing a firearm at a former federal officer on a live audio feed being monitored by the State Attorney General."
Outside, the quiet night was shattered by the sudden, deafening roar of sirens.
High-power spotlights pierced the darkness, blinding the front porch as three unmarked black armored SUVs tore up the winding driveway, destroying Arthur’s pristine lawn. Tires shrieked against gravel, and within six seconds, ten tactical officers in dark blue uniforms with state police insignias flooded the porch, weapons raised.
"State Police! Hands where we can see them! Drop the weapon!"
Arthur’s gun clattered onto the floor. He raised his trembling hands into the air, his lips moving soundlessly. Miriam backed into a wall, her pristine facade completely crumbling into high-pitched whimpers as officers forced Julian to the floor, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
I didn't wait to watch them get arrested. I sprinted up the grand spiral staircase, my wet boots leaving dark tracks on their million-dollar rug.
"Audrey!" I roared, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Audrey!"

A weak thud answered from the end of the second-floor hallway. I threw myself against a heavy mahogany door at the end of the corridor. It was locked from the outside with a brass deadbolt key.
Without hesitating, I raised my right boot and drove it directly into the frame beside the lock. The wood splintered with a sound like a gunshot. I kicked it a second time, and the heavy door burst inward.
