Chapter 8 - The Financial Dominoes Fall

Seth’s arrest made local news headlines by Thursday morning: 'Prominent San Diego Executive Arrested for Felony Child Abuse at Family Gathering.'

The video footage leaked to the press through an anonymous court filing—and the public outrage was swift and brutal. Within twenty-four hours, every single investor pulled out of Seth’s real estate startup. His credentials were revoked, and his wife Megan left him, packing her bags and moving into a hotel with their children.

My father spent over $100,000 on high-powered defense attorneys to bail Seth out, but the criminal evidence was insurmountable.

However, the nightmare for my parents was only just beginning.

While reviewing the footage on the security drive, Detective Miller’s team noticed a secondary file folder labeled 'Accounts_Private' that Arthur had accidentally backed up to the same home server.

Detective Miller called me into the station on Friday afternoon.

"Kallie," Detective Miller said, gesturing to a stack of financial documents spread across his desk. "When our forensic digital team analyzed the server drive you provided, they uncovered three years of hidden financial ledgers."

"Financial ledgers?" I asked, confused.

"Your father and Seth haven't just been hiding domestic violence," Detective Miller revealed, leaning forward. "They have been running an offshore wire-fraud operation through your father's commercial firm, siphoning off funds from family estate trusts—including the trust left to you and your daughter by your late grandmother."

I gasped, covering my mouth. "They stole Paisley's inheritance?"

"Over $400,000 was moved into Seth's shell accounts in the Cayman Islands over the last eighteen months," Detective Miller stated. "The IRS Criminal Investigation division has just taken over the financial wing of the case. Your father and brother are looking at federal indictment."

The house of cards my father had spent thirty years building wasn't just falling—it was burning to the ground.

An hour later, my phone rang. It was my mother.

Her voice wasn't arrogant anymore. It wasn't angry. It was weak, hysterical, and broken.

"Kallie... please..." she sobbed into the phone. "The federal agents are at our house... they are taking Arthur's papers... they are seizing the cars... Kallie, please tell them it was all a misunderstanding! We're your family!"

I listened to her cries, remembering how she stood between me and Seth while my daughter bled and wept on her living room rug.

"You chose your story, Mom," I said, my voice cold and calm. "Now you have to live in it."

I hung up the phone and blocked her number forever.
