Chapter 4 - The Hidden Lens

On Tuesday morning, my phone rang with an unknown local number.

"Kallie? Is that you?" a hushed, nervous voice whispered through the speaker.

I recognized the voice instantly. It was my younger cousin, Mia—a nineteen-year-old college student who had been sitting near the kitchen door during the party.

"Mia? Why are you whispering?" I asked.

"I'm in my car outside my dorm," Mia said rapidly, her voice trembling. "Kallie, I felt sick to my stomach on Saturday. What Seth did was disgusting, and what Uncle Arthur and Aunt Bethany are doing to you right now is evil."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. "Thank you, Mia... nobody else said anything."

"Nobody said anything because Uncle Arthur pays for everyone’s tuition and family vacations!" Mia revealed bitterly. "Everyone is terrified of being cut off! But Kallie... there's something you don't know about Aunt Bethany's living room."

I sat up straight. "What do you mean?"

"About six months ago, after my grandma started showing signs of dementia, Uncle Arthur installed a smart security system in the living room," Mia explained. "It’s hidden inside the frame of that large oil painting above the fireplace. It records high-definition video and continuous audio to an encrypted home hub in Arthur's home office."

My breath caught in my throat.

"The slap... the entire party was recorded?" I gasped.

"Yes!" Mia whispered. "Every single second! Seth slapping Paisley, Aunt Bethany telling you to shut up, Uncle Arthur calling Paisley spoiled... all of it is sitting on the hard drive in Uncle Arthur's desk!"

"Does the police know about this camera?"

"No! Arthur disabled the local app access on everyone's phones the moment you left on Saturday," Mia said. "He's planning to wipe the hard drive tonight before the detectives execute a search warrant! I heard him talking to Seth on the phone this morning!"

A cold fire ignited inside my veins. If Arthur wiped that drive, it would be my word against twenty brainwashed relatives. But if I got those files, the truth would be immortalized forever.

"Mia," I said, my mind racing at lightspeed. "Do you still have the spare key to Arthur's house from when you house-sat for them last month?"

Mia went quiet for a long moment. Then, she let out a slow, resolute breath.

"I have the key, Kallie," Mia said firmly. "Tell me what you need me to do."
