Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Campaign

By Monday morning, my family’s defensive strategy shifted into an all-out war.

I woke up to find myself blocked from my father's business accounts, removed from the family trust communications, and locked out of the shared cloud photo drives containing pictures of my late grandmother.

My sister-in-law, Megan—Seth’s wife—posted a lengthy, vague message on Facebook that immediately began circulating among our extended community:

"It's heartbreaking when family members use their children as pawns to settle personal jealousies. Mental health is a serious issue, and we are praying for someone close to us who needs deep professional help right now..."

Dozens of family friends commented on the post, offering prayers and expressing sympathy for Seth and Megan.

I sat at my kitchen table in my apartment, watching the narrative shift in real-time. To the outside world, Seth was a devoted uncle being maligned by an unhinged, bitter sister.

At 2:00 PM, my front doorbell rang.

I looked through the security camera monitor mounted by my entry hallway. Standing on my porch was my father, Arthur Reynolds, wearing his tailored business suit, holding a leather briefcase.

I unlocked the door, keeping the metal chain latch securely engaged. "What do you want, Dad?"

Arthur frowned, looking around the hallway as if disgusted to be standing outside my door. "Unlatch the door, Kallie. We need to talk like adults."

"We have nothing to talk about until Seth turns himself into the police," I replied, my voice steady.

Arthur’s eyes turned icy cold. "Listen to me very carefully, Kallie. You are playing a game you cannot win. Seth is pitching his new commercial real estate firm to major investors this month. A domestic charge—even a false one—will destroy his reputation. Do you have any idea what that will do to this family's finances?"

"He struck a two-year-old child in front of twenty people!" I yelled, anger flaring through my chest. "He hurt Paisley! Does her pain mean anything to you?"

"She has a tiny red mark that will be gone in two days!" Arthur snapped quietly, leaning closer to the crack in the door. "Children get bumped all the time! You are inflating an everyday disciplinary moment into a federal crime because you've always been jealous of Seth's success!"

"Leave, Dad."

"If you move forward with these police reports," Arthur warned, pointing a finger through the door, "I will cut you off entirely. I will hire the best defense team in Southern California, and we will drag your name through the mud until no court in this state lets you keep full custody of Paisley. Try us."

He turned on his heel and strode away down the hallway.

I closed the door and leaned my back against the hard wood, taking deep, shaky breaths.

They thought they could intimidate me with money and lawyers. They thought because I was a single mother working as a freelance accountant, I didn't have the strength to fight back.

They forgot one fundamental detail: I was an accountant. And I knew exactly where all of Arthur and Seth's money came from.
