Chapter 6 - The Apology and the New Order

Mom froze, her eyes widening in shock. "On my knees? Claire, I am your mother! You can't humiliate me like this!"

"You humiliated my eight-year-old son in a room full of twenty-two people last night, Mom," I replied, my voice deadpan. "You told him he should have packed his own food while his cousins ate hundred-and-twenty-dollar steaks. You have exactly ten seconds to make your choice. The apology, or the bankruptcy paperwork is filed at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

Dad looked at his wife, his face desperate. "Eleanor... please. Do it for the family."

With trembling hands and a face burning with pure humiliation, my mother slowly slid off the sofa onto the hardwood floor. She crawled slightly toward Noah, who looked bewildered but stood his ground.

"Noah," Mom choked out, her voice shaking with repressed rage and shame. "I... I am so sorry for what I said last night. It was cruel, and it was wrong. You deserved to have a beautiful dinner with your grandfather."

Noah looked up at me, seeking permission. I nodded gently.

"It’s okay, Grandma," Noah said softly, his innocent voice making her shame even more profound. "Mommy bought me a really big steak anyway."

Mom scrambled back to her feet, unable to look me in the eye. Dad stood up beside her, nodding solemnly. "Thank you, Claire. I will have Eric’s termination papers drawn up tonight. The keys to the executive office will be on your desk tomorrow morning."

As they walked out of my apartment, I felt a massive, suffocating weight lift from my chest. For thirty-two years, I had been the quiet, compliant daughter who kept her head down to maintain the peace. But the peace was a lie. True peace only came when you were strong enough to enforce it.
