Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

The silence in the ballroom was even heavier than the one at the restaurant the night before. Eric’s microphone fell from his hand, clattering against the wooden stage with a deafening screech.

"Claire?" Dad stood up from his chair, his hands trembling. "What is the meaning of this? You... you are Vanguard Capital?"

"For the last three years, Dad," I said, turning to face him and the entire board of directors. "When Mom had her major surgery three years ago and the company almost went under due to Eric’s disastrous tech investments, you thought an anonymous angel investor bought out our distressed corporate debt. You thought a private equity firm infused five million dollars of liquidity to keep the payroll running."

I looked over at Eric, whose face had gone completely bloodless.

"That wasn't an anonymous investor, Dad. That was me. I founded Vanguard Capital eight years ago using my own savings and the proprietary algorithms I developed. I kept my name off the public registry to keep the peace in this family, allowing Eric to pretend he was a brilliant businessman while I quietly bought up every single outstanding share of Voss Logistics."

"You... you deceitful snake!" Eric yelled, completely forgetting he was in a room full of hundreds of business elites. He lunged toward me, but two security guards I had hired for the event immediately stepped onto the stage, blocking his path. "She stole the company! Dad, tell them! She can't do this!"

"Actually, Mr. Voss," my corporate attorney, who had just walked onto the stage, announced clearly into the secondary microphone. "Under the terms of the 2023 restructuring agreement signed by Arthur Voss, the primary debt holder has absolute veto power over executive appointments. Since Ms. Claire owns eighty percent of the equity, Eric's appointment as CEO is legally void. Furthermore, Vanguard Capital is calling in the immediate repayment of the five-million-dollar emergency loan."

My mother shrieked from the VIP table, burying her face in her hands. Vanessa, Eric’s wife, looked like she was about to faint as she realized her country club lifestyle was evaporating in mid-air.

I looked down at Eric, who was now shaking with rage and terror. "You told me last night that kids eat hotdogs and they survive, Eric. Let’s see how well a grown man survives without a family account to pay his bills. You have twenty-four hours to clear out your desk."
