Chapter 8 - The Gala Revisited

One year to the day after the infamous gala at the Royal Palms Resort, Vanguard Medical Systems hosted its annual anniversary celebration.

This time, the venue was not a glittering, exclusive ballroom filled with pretentious executives whispering behind champagne glasses. Instead, Marcus and the board agreed to host the event at the Miami Science Museum—a vibrant, open space surrounded by interactive exhibits, planetariums, and exhibits celebrating human ingenuity, science, and community health.

There was no dress code requiring black tie or designer gowns. Invitations were sent not just to board members and investors, but to frontline doctors, emergency nurses, software engineers, and their families.

At 7:00 PM, I walked through the grand glass entrance of the museum wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress.

By my side walked Zoey, now six years old, wearing a brand-new navy blue dress dotted with hand-painted silver stars. Her hair was tied back with a matching green ribbon.

As we stepped into the main atrium, where soft string music played near a towering replica of a satellite, several senior hospital administrators and software engineers walked over to greet us. There were no fake smiles or calculated glances at our shoes. There was only genuine warmth, gratitude, and mutual respect.

“Vivian! So wonderful to see you,” Dr. Elena Vance—no relation to Marcus or Kevin, but a leading pediatric surgeon from our partner hospital in Orlando—greeted me warmly, shaking my hand. “And who is this lovely young lady?”

“This is Zoey,” I smiled, gently nudging my daughter forward.

Zoey smiled shyly, clutching a small sketchbook under her arm. “Hello. I drew a rocket ship today.”

“I would love to see it,” Dr. Vance said, kneeling down to Zoey’s eye level with genuine interest.

I stood back, watching the interaction with a heart full of quiet peace.

Across the room, Marcus Vance caught my eye from near the stage and raised his glass in a silent toast. I lifted my sparkling cider in response.
