Chapter 6 - The Fallout at Palm Beach

While our home remained a sanctuary of peace and laughter, the world outside was moving at a merciless pace for the Pembrokes.
By the end of the week, federal agents from the SEC and the FBI executed search warrants on Roderick’s waterfront estate in Coral Gables and his vacation home in Palm Beach. News vans lined the palm-tree-shaded streets as federal marshals hauled away filing cabinets, hard drives, and boxes of financial documents bearing the offshore shell company names we had uncovered during the audit.
Priscilla Pembroke’s high-society friends—the very women who had sipped champagne with her under the crystal chandeliers of the Royal Palms Resort—suddenly developed a severe allergy to her phone calls. Country club memberships were quietly suspended "pending administrative review." Charity boards she had chaired for years voted unanimously to accept her "voluntary resignation."
The social fortress she had spent two decades constructing had turned out to be built on quicksand.
On Friday afternoon, my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar Miami number.
I let it go to voicemail, but seconds later, a frantic text message followed.
“Vivian, please. I know you’re reading this. It’s Priscilla. We need to talk. Roderick is facing twenty years in federal prison. Everything we own has been frozen by the court. Please... just five minutes of your time.”
I stared at the message screen for a long moment. There was no anger left in me—only a quiet, distant pity for someone who had defined her entire existence by superficial dominance.
I tapped out a brief reply.
“Priscilla, I don't run the Department of Justice, and I don't manage asset forfeiture. If you have statements to give regarding the corporate funds funneled into your personal accounts, I suggest you speak directly with the federal prosecutors handling the case. Goodbye.”

I blocked the number, tossed my phone onto the marble kitchen island, and walked over to the window to watch Zoey chase a butterfly across the backyard lawn.
Some people spend their entire lives building walls of arrogance to keep others out, never realizing that those very walls will eventually become their prison.
