Chapter 3 - The Shell Game

Danielle Brooks flipped open tab twelve with the practiced efficiency of a veteran prosecutor. The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the air conditioning unit overhead.

“Well, well, well,” Danielle murmured, her eyes scanning the dense columns of figures, routing numbers, and corporate signatures. “This is fascinating. The transfers to Aegis-7 were authorized under a special executive override clause—a clause granted exclusively to the Chief Executive Officer for urgent emergency acquisitions.”

She looked up, fixing her sharp gaze on Roderick.

“Except there were no emergencies, Mr. Pembroke. According to these wire logs, every single one of these multi-million-dollar disbursements occurred on the final business day of each fiscal quarter. Right before the external auditors came in to review the primary accounts.”

Kevin shifted uncomfortably in his seat, sweating profusely despite the cool room. “That... that was for proprietary offshore data encryption algorithms! To protect patient data from foreign cyber threats!”

“Really, Kevin?” I asked softly, resting my chin on my intertwined fingers. “Because I had our internal IT security team run a deep forensic scan of every codebase deployed across our hospital network over the past three years. Not a single line of code originated from Aegis-7. In fact, the digital footprint of that entity leads directly to a residential property in West Palm Beach registered under a trust managed by a private wealth firm in the Bahamas.”

Roderick gripped the edges of the table so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. He looked around the room, seeking an ally among the independent board members, but found only cold, judgmental stares. Aaron Vance leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Roderick,” Aaron said coldly, “you have five seconds to explain why company capital—fiduciary funds entrusted to you by shareholders—was being funneled into a private wealth trust in the Bahamas.”

Roderick closed his eyes for a long moment, the arrogant veneer of the corporate titan completely gone, leaving behind only a desperate, cornered man.

“It wasn't just me,” Roderick whispered, his voice trembling. “The market was shifting. Hospitals were cutting IT budgets. Our stock price was flat. To maintain our quarterly growth projections and secure my annual executive performance bonuses... I had to show artificial growth. The board wanted double-digit returns year after year. I gave them what they asked for.”

“No, Roderick,” I corrected him, my voice rising just enough to command the entire room. “You gave yourself what you wanted. You traded the integrity of a company that saves lives for a bigger bonus check, a larger estate, and a lifestyle that allowed your wife to look down her nose at a little girl in a star-patterned dress.”

Kevin raised a trembling hand. “I... I was just following orders! Roderick made me sign off on the routing authorizations! If I refused, he threatened to blackball me from the entire healthcare tech industry!”

“Your compliance officer obligations don't disappear because your boss threatens your career, Kevin,” Danielle noted coolly, sliding a fresh compliance violation form across the table toward him. “You’ll have plenty of time to explain your compliance philosophy to federal investigators.”
