Chapter 5 - A New Order at Villa Hart

For thirty seconds, nobody moved. The dealers, the enforcers, the career criminals—men who ruled the city through fear and violence—stared in open-mouthed awe at the impossible scene unfolding in the center of the dirt ring.
Julian Hart stood motionless. He looked down at the dog that had defied every professional trainer, every brutal handler, and every heavy-handed enforcer in his organization—now sitting docile and protective beside a nine-year-old blind girl.
Slowly, Julian unclasped the leather gloves from his knuckles and let them drop into the dust.
He walked forward, his heavy boots making a slow, deliberate crunch against the gravel, stopping just a few feet away from Maisie and the dog. Cyrus let out a low warning growl, his teeth bared slightly, but Maisie gently reached out her hand, letting her fingertips brush the dog's thick, scarred collar.
"Easy, boy," she whispered.
Cyrus immediately quieted, resting his chin heavily on Maisie’s lap.
Julian looked down at the girl, his hard, weathered features softening into something uncharacteristically complex. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a thick leather-bound checkbook and a gold-plated pen, and scribbled his signature across a slip of paper without hesitation.
He tore it out and knelt down beside them, holding the check out toward Maisie’s small hand.
"One million dollars," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual chilling edge. "And a standing offer: the dog stays with you, and your family never has to worry about money, protection, or enemies in this city ever again."
Maisie didn't take the check right away. She turned her sightless eyes toward the sound of Julian's voice, sensing the profound shift in the powerful man kneeling before her.
"He doesn't want to live in a cage anymore, Mr. Hart," Maisie said firmly.

Julian looked at the massive German Shepherd, then back up at the brave little girl who had achieved the impossible with nothing more than empathy and an open heart. A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of the mafia boss's mouth.
"Then he won't have to," Julian replied softly. "Consider him yours, Commander."
