MAFIA BOSS BETS $1M NO ONE CAN CALM HIS AGGRESSIVE DOG — BLIND LITTLE GIRL PROVES HIM WRONG

One million dollars. The words cut through the underground arena like a death sentence. Julian Hart didn't raise his voice. He never needed to. The crowd of dealers, enforcers, and career criminals pressed against the chain-link barriers fell silent, their breath caught somewhere between greed and survival instinct. Men who had watched executions without blinking found themselves holding still, waiting to see what kind of fool would step forward for a sum most of them would never see in a decade of work.

The abandoned sports complex reeked of sweat, concrete dust, and something metallic that might have been fear. Industrial lights swung overhead, casting sharp shadows across faces that had seen too much and said too little. This wasn't the kind of place where questions got asked. It was the kind of place where questions got buried, along with anyone foolish enough to keep asking them.

Julian stood at the center of the dirt floor, leather gloves tied across his knuckles, his tailored suit somehow pristine despite the grime surrounding him. He wasn't here to negotiate. He was here to prove a point. One million, he repeated, each syllable deliberate. Cash to anyone who can get that animal to sit beside them for five minutes without tearing their throat out.

Every eye turned toward the steel kennel rattling at the far end of the arena. Cyrus. The German Shepherd's growl vibrated through the floor like a warning tremor before an earthquake. His massive frame slammed against the reinforced cage door, claws scraping metal, teeth flashing under the harsh lights. Scars crossed his muzzle, souvenirs from the men who'd tried and failed to break him into something more manageable. His eyes — wild, fractured, unreadable — scanned the crowd like he was selecting targets.

Three trainers had already quit, walking off the job without collecting their final pay rather than spend one more day near the cage. Two handlers had left in ambulances, one with a forearm that would never fully heal. One enforcer, a man who'd broken bones for a living without losing sleep over it, refused to even look at the dog anymore, crossing to the far side of any room Cyrus occupied. Cyrus wasn't just aggressive. He was shattered, and everyone who'd spent time near him could feel the difference, even if none of them had the vocabulary to name it.

Anyone? Julian's voice held the kind of amusement reserved for men who'd stopped believing in surprises. Or should I assume you're all as useless as you smell. A few men shifted uncomfortably. Others cursed under their breath. No one moved forward.

Near the back of the arena, tucked behind a support beam where the lights didn't quite reach, a small girl with two neat braids stood perfectly still. Her hands, clasped against her chest, trembled slightly — not from fear, but from restraint.

Maisie Doyle had no business being here. Her older brother had only brought her because leaving her home alone felt more dangerous than bringing her to a mafia spectacle, a judgment call he was already regretting the moment they'd walked through the loading dock doors and into the noise and stink of the arena. And even then, he'd sworn to keep her far from the center ring, positioning them near an exit he could reach in seconds if anything went wrong. But Maisie had heard Cyrus the moment they'd walked in. Not the snarling, not the threats — the breathing, quick, shallow, panicked, a rhythm she recognized instantly from years of listening to the world in ways sighted people never bothered to. She tilted her head, her sightless eyes focused on nothing and everything at once. The world came to her in sounds, in textures, in the spaces between noise. And Cyrus's fear was louder than any growl, louder than the crowd, louder than her brother's tightening grip on her shoulder.
