Chapter 3 - Breaking the Silence

The crowd held its collective breath. Even the underground bookies stopped calculating odds, their eyes glued to the small figure kneeling in the dust.
Maisie didn't reach out toward the cage. She didn't call the dog's name. Instead, she did something that completely baffled every hardened criminal in the room: she closed her eyes, raised her hands palms-upward, and began to hum.
It wasn't a song with lyrics. It was a low, melodic, vibrating tone—a frequency she had learned to use when she herself had been overwhelmed by the roaring chaos of the city streets. It was a sound designed to mimic the steady, rhythmic pulsing of a heartbeat.
Inside the steel kennel, Cyrus’s furious thrashing suddenly stuttered.
The heavy, frantic scratching against the metal slowed. The snarling dropped an octave, turning into a low, confused whimper. The massive German Shepherd pressed his snout against the vertical bars, sniffing frantically at the air as the strange, soothing frequency washed over him.
"What is she doing?" a dealer muttered in disbelief, gripping the chain-link fence. "The dog's supposed to tear her apart!"
"Shut up," Julian hissed, raising a single gloved hand to silence the room. His eyes were locked on the dog. For the first time all evening, the ruthless mafia boss looked genuinely rattled.
Maisie shifted slightly closer on her knees, keeping her movements slow, deliberate, and predictable. She spoke in a gentle, conversational tone, as if she were talking to a frightened classmate on a playground.

"I know it's loud, big guy," she murmured, her voice carrying clearly through the silent arena. "I know everybody here wants to hurt you. But you're safe now. You don't have to fight the iron anymore."
Cyrus stopped scratching entirely. He let out a long, shuddering sigh that sounded like a deflating tire, his massive frame trembling from head to toe. Slowly, agonizingly, the fierce predator began to lower his heavy hindquarters.
