Chapter 1 - The Sound of the Cage

The heavy metal clang of Cyrus slamming against the steel kennel vibrated right through the concrete floor of the abandoned sports complex. The sound carried a raw, desperate fury that made the hardened dealers and career criminals standing along the chain-link barriers step back instinctively. Julian Hart stood untouched at the center of the dirt ring, his tailored suit immaculate, a slight smirk playing on his lips as he let the $1 million wager hang heavy in the air.

No one moved. No one dared. The reputation of the German Shepherd was legendary among the underground syndicates; he was a scarred, unpredictable weapon that had already sent two handlers to the hospital and broken the nerves of every professional trainer in the city.

Yet, near the back of the arena, tucked safely behind a shadowed concrete support beam, a nine-year-old blind girl named Maisie turned her head toward the sound. While everyone else heard only a monster's growl, Maisie heard something completely different. Her sightless eyes were wide, her ears tuned to the frantic, shallow rhythm of a living creature drowning in pure, unadulterated terror.

Her older brother, Liam, gripped her shoulder tightly, his voice shaking with panic. "Stay back, Maisie. Don't even look that way. That animal will tear anyone apart."

"He's not angry, Liam," Maisie whispered softly, her fingers twitching against the hem of her jacket. "He's terrified."

Before Liam could stop her, Maisie slipped her hand free from his grip. Relying entirely on the acoustics of the cavernous space, the subtle shifts of the gravel beneath her sneakers, and the vibrating echoes of the cage, she began to walk forward into the open arena.
