Chapter 9 - The Midnight Siege

My maternal instincts eclipsed every ounce of fear I had ever known.
While Marcus raced up the stairs to intercept the intruder, I didn't wait in the safety of the panic room. I punched the manual override button, shoved the heavy steel door open, and bolted out into the hallway.
"Lena, get back inside!" one of the tactical guards shouted, raising his rifle.
"My daughter is in that room!" I yelled, pushing past him.
I sprinted down the dimly lit corridor just as Marcus reached the nursery doors. Gunshots cracked through the silent night—sharp, deafening pops that shattered the antique vase on the hallway console.
Marcus fired a warning shot into the ceiling, pinning the intruder behind the heavy velvet drapes near the balcony.
"Drop the child, and you walk out of here alive!" Marcus barked, his weapon aimed dead center at the shadow.
The masked man laughed—a harsh, jagged sound. He stepped out from behind the drapes, holding a trembling Lily in one arm, while pressing the barrel of a silenced pistol directly against her tiny temple.
My heart completely stopped. The room spun wildly on its axis.
"Take another step, and the brat takes the fall," the operative snarled, his eyes wild with desperation. "Sterling’s orders. If we go down, the Callahan bloodline goes with us."
"Don't do it," I choked out, tears streaming hot and fast down my face as I stepped out into the open, my hands raised. "Please... take me. Leave my baby alone."
"Shut up!" the man screamed, his finger twitching nervously against the trigger.
Before Marcus could take the shot, a shadow detached itself from the balcony doors behind the operative.
Ethan Callahan had arrived.
He didn't yell. He didn't negotiate. He moved with the terrifying, silent speed of a striking viper.
With a deafening crash, Ethan vaulted over the balcony railing, slamming his full weight directly into the operative’s back. The man screamed as he crashed hard against the hardwood floor, his pistol skittering across the room.
Marcus lunged forward, kicking the weapon away and pinning the operative to the ground with a knee to his spine.
Ethan didn't waste a second. He dropped to his knees, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out and scooped Lily into his arms. She was crying hysterically, terrified by the noise and chaos.
Ethan pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her dark curls, rocking her back and forth just as he had done that very first day in his downtown office.

I collapsed onto my knees beside them, sobbing uncontrollably as I reached out and pulled both of them into my arms.
"She's safe," Ethan whispered against my hair, his voice thick with unshed tears. "She's safe, Lena. I've got you both."
