Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Caleb Callahan

The sun had long since set, painting the Chicago skyline in shades of bruised purple and neon amber. Upstairs, the dinner rush had finally faded into the quiet hum of closing procedures, but down in Ethan’s private sanctum, time had ceased to exist.

Lily had woken up an hour ago, fed hungrily from the bottle Ethan had helped warm, and was now sleeping peacefully in the high-end portable crib Marcus had rushed out to purchase from a luxury boutique downtown.

Ethan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of confidential digital files displayed on a sleek, dual-monitor setup. I sat across from him in a velvet armchair, a cup of chamomile tea cooling between my hands.

"The private investigator I hired six months ago hit a dead end in Milwaukee," Ethan said, scrolling rapidly through lines of financial records and police reports. "He told me Caleb had dissolved his bank accounts and boarded a freighter bound for Canada. But looking at these dates..." He paused, tapping a finger against the glass screen. "This doesn't add up."

"What doesn't add up?" I asked, leaning forward.

"The timeline of Caleb’s disappearance matches the exact week Callahan Global was preparing for a hostile takeover bid by the Sterling Group," Ethan explained, his eyes narrowing. "Our primary corporate rival at the time. At first, I thought Caleb was just hiding from me. But if he was in contact with you right up until you were six months pregnant..."

"He was," I confirmed, a heavy ache settling in my chest. "He kissed my forehead the morning he disappeared. He told me he was going to the hardware store to pick up supplies for the nursery we were building in our cramped little apartment. He never came back. His car was found abandoned near the harbor, unlocked, with his wallet and phone inside."

Ethan’s expression darkened into something lethal. "A staged disappearance."

"What do you mean?"

"Caleb wasn't hiding from me, Lena," Ethan said slowly, the realization dawning with terrifying clarity. "He was running from someone who found out he was the secret heir to Callahan Global. Someone wanted leverage against me, or worse... they wanted our bloodline wiped out entirely."

The tea mug shook in my hands, spilling a few amber drops onto the saucer. "You think someone murdered him?"

"I don't know," Ethan admitted, standing up and walking over to the fireplace. He gripped the mantelpiece tightly, his knuckles turning white. "For seven months, I believed my brother was a coward who chose to abandon his family. Now I find out he left behind a woman he loved and a daughter he never got to hold. If someone took him from us..." He didn't finish the sentence, but the silent promise of retribution hung heavy in the room.

Just then, the heavy oak door clicked open, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder stamped with confidential red lettering.

"Boss," Marcus said, nodding respectfully toward me before turning to Ethan. "You asked me to pull the local hospital and coroner records from the exact week Caleb vanished. I found something interesting."

Ethan turned around instantly. "Talk."

"There was no body recovered near the harbor," Marcus reported, flipping open the folder. "In fact, the car was planted by a professional car-cleaner who was paid in cash by an offshore shell corporation. And that shell corporation traces directly back to a subsidiary of Sterling Industries."

The name hit the room like a physical blow.

Arthur Sterling. The aging, ruthless billionaire who sat on the outer board of Callahan Global, always smiling, always watching, always waiting for a weakness to exploit.

Ethan’s eyes flared with a terrifying, cold light.

"Sterling," Ethan whispered, the name grating like stones grinding together. "He didn't just want my company. He wanted my family."

I looked from Ethan to Marcus, my heart pounding in a frantic rhythm. "If Sterling has your brother... if Caleb is still out there somewhere..."

"We are going to find him," Ethan interrupted, his voice brooking no argument. He walked back to his desk, picking up his suit jacket and slipping it on with an air of absolute dominion. "And if Sterling laid a single finger on my brother, I will dismantle his entire empire brick by brick until there is nothing left of him to bury."
