Chapter 4 - The Fortress of the Wolf

By midnight, Ethan had enacted the first phase of a plan that would permanently alter the trajectory of my life.

Instead of returning to my small, drafty apartment across the city, Ethan insisted—with an unyielding authority that left zero room for debate—that Lily and I move into his heavily fortified suburban estate in Winnetka.

"You are no longer safe in that apartment, Lena," Ethan told me as Marcus loaded our sparse belongings into the trunk of a sleek black bulletproof Mercedes. "If Sterling’s people are monitoring your old address, they will eventually trace your connection to Caleb. You and Lily belong under my roof now."

The Winnetka estate was less of a house and more of a modern fortress. Nestled behind towering iron security gates and surrounded by acres of dense, private woodlands, the glass-and-steel mansion was a masterpiece of architectural intimidation. Armed security guards patrolled the perimeter, and the interior was a seamless blend of minimalist luxury and high-tech defense systems.

As Marcus carried a sleeping Lily upstairs to a stunning, sunlit nursery that had been magically transformed in a matter of hours, I stood in the middle of the grand vaulted living room, feeling completely out of place.

Ethan walked up behind me, holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling water. He handed one to me.

"You look like you're waiting for the other shoe to drop," Ethan observed quietly, taking a sip of his water.

I looked around at the soaring ceilings, the original art pieces hanging on the gallery walls, and the crackling stone fireplace. "I'm a waitress from a modest neighborhood, Ethan. I live paycheck to paycheck, worrying about rent and grocery bills. This... this is a palace. I don't belong here."

Ethan stepped closer, his stormy grey eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch.

"You belong wherever you and my niece are safe," Ethan said firmly. "Stop treating yourself like an outsider, Lena. You survived a world that tried to break you, and you raised a brilliant, beautiful child entirely on your own strength. That makes you stronger than half the corporate executives who bow to me every day."

His words warmed a part of my heart that had been frozen since Caleb disappeared. I looked up into his face, noticing for the first time the subtle lines of exhaustion etched around his eyes. Beneath the billionaire armor, beneath the terrifying reputation of the cold wolf of Chicago, there was a man who had spent years carrying the burden of a broken family—just like I had carried the burden of a broken heart.

"Thank you, Ethan," I whispered, my voice softening. "For everything. For not throwing us out, for protecting us... and for looking for Caleb."

Ethan’s expression softened, a rare, ghost-like smile touching the corners of his lips. "We're in this together now, Lena. Get some sleep. Tomorrow, we start hunting wolves."
