Chapter 2 - Blood and Echoes

The silence in Ethan Callahan’s private office grew so heavy that I could hear the faint, steady ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner. My breath hitched in my throat, trapped behind a wall of disbelief and sudden, suffocating terror.

"Caleb..." I whispered, the name tasting foreign and heavy on my tongue, yet carrying the ghost of every broken promise whispered in the dark. "Your brother's name was Caleb?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately. He remained kneeling beside the leather sofa, his broad shoulders tense beneath his tailored white dress shirt. His gaze was entirely locked onto Lily, who had shifted in her sleep, letting out a tiny sigh as one of her small hands curled tighter around his finger.

The resemblance, once pointed out, was blindingly obvious. The shape of the dark, thick curls framing her forehead, the stubborn arch of her upper lip, the deep, expressive curve of her eyes—they were mirror images of the man who had walked out of my life seven months ago without a backward glance.

"How long ago?" Ethan’s voice cut through the stillness, dropping into a register so cold and sharp it made me shiver. "When did you know him?"

"A little over a year ago," I answered, my voice trembling as old grief and fresh shock collided in my chest. "We met at a small diner near the university where I was taking night classes. He told me his name was Caleb Parker. He said he worked as an auto mechanic, that he didn't care about money, ambition, or family names. He told me... he told me he was an orphan."

Ethan’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked in his cheek. A dark, dangerous shadow passed over his stormy grey eyes.

"An orphan," Ethan repeated bitterly, a dry, humorless laugh escaping his lips. "Caleb Callahan, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire, told a stranger he was an orphan."

"Why?" I demanded, a surge of long-suppressed anger finally breaking through my fear. "Why would he lie about something like that? Do you have any idea what it was like? We scraped by on whatever he made at that garage. I worked double shifts at this very restaurant while pregnant, believing we were building something together from nothing. And then, right when I was six months pregnant, he vanished. No note. No explanation. Just an empty bed and a closed bank account."

Ethan slowly stood up to his full, towering height. He towered over me, but there was no intimidation in his posture now—only a terrifying, controlled fury directed outward, toward the ghost of his younger brother.

"Caleb didn't leave because he wanted poverty," Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet. "He left because he was running away from me."

I stared up at him, completely bewildered. "Running away from you? Why would anyone run away from a brother who provides security like this?"

"Because," Ethan said, turning away to look out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline, "our father was a tyrant who crushed everyone he touched. When he died, he left the entire estate to me, cutting Caleb out completely because my brother refused to participate in the corporate bloodsport of Callahan Global. Caleb wanted a normal life. He wanted to break away. But I spent years trying to track him down, trying to drag him back into a world he despised. I thought I was protecting him. Instead... I drove him further into hiding."

He turned back around, his eyes burning with a raw intensity that left me breathless.

"And then he met you." Ethan looked down at Lily again, his expression softening into something achingly tender. "And instead of an orphan, he left behind a daughter. My niece."

The word hung in the air between us like a physical weight. Niece. Lily wasn't just the child of a man who abandoned me; she was the bloodline of the most powerful corporate dynasty in Chicago.

"What does this mean?" I whispered, my hands gripping my apron as panic threatened to swallow me whole. "Are you going to take her from me? Do you want custody? Because I swear to God, Mr. Callahan—"

"Ethan," he corrected instantly, his tone brooking no argument. He stepped closer, stopping just inches away from me. "Listen to me, Lena. I don't care about bloodlines, corporate leverage, or legacy right now. My brother abandoned you, which makes him a coward. But you kept my niece alive under impossible circumstances while working for my company without asking for a single dime of charity."

May you like

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently touching my shoulder.

"You are not losing your job, Lena. And no one is ever taking Lily away from you," Ethan promised, his voice vibrating with absolute, unshakable power. "Starting today, your life changes. But first... we are going to find out what happened to my brother."
