Chapter 5 - Reckoning in the Boardroom

The glass skyscraper of Carter Global Tower pierced the gray morning skyline of Chicago. At 8:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the eightieth floor was packed with powerful directors, corporate attorneys, and major shareholders. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Julian Vance, looking remarkably composed, flanked by Senator Richard Brooks and Evelyn.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian announced, pressing a button on his microphone. "We are here today to address an unprecedented crisis of leadership. Lucas Carter's recent erratic behavior, his unilateral abandonment of the Vance merger, and his personal entanglements threaten the very foundation of this enterprise. Under Article 7, we present a motion to strip Mr. Carter of his executive authority and appoint an interim management committee."

"A motion that requires a majority vote," Senator Brooks added smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "Lucas has abandoned his duties. He has gone into hiding. We must act decisively to protect shareholder value."

Before the board members could signal their assent, the heavy double doors at the rear of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud. Every head in the room turned.

I walked into the boardroom, flanked by Marcus Vance and two senior federal prosecutors from the Southern District of Illinois. I was dressed in a tailored navy suit, my expression unyielding, my posture commanding the entire space. The atmosphere in the room instantly evaporated into tense silence.

"Apologies for my late arrival," I said, my voice carrying across the silent chamber. "I was busy ensuring that true shareholder value—and moral justice—was represented here today."

Julian stood up, his face flushing with anger. "Lucas! You have no right to interrupt these proceedings! You are suspended pending a formal review!"

"I am the majority voting shareholder of this company, Julian," I said, walking slowly down the center of the table until I reached the head. "And as CEO, I am chairing this meeting."

Evelyn glared at me, her voice sharp. "Lucas, don't make this embarrassing for yourself. You can't undo the damage you've caused. My father and Julian have the board's support."

"Do they?" I smiled coldly. I gestured to Marcus, who connected a secure drive to the boardroom screen. Instantly, giant high-definition displays filled with financial records, wire transfer receipts, and the sworn affidavit of Clara Higgins.

"What you see on the screen before you," I announced to the room, "is evidence of an eight-year criminal conspiracy orchestrated by Julian Vance and Senator Richard Brooks. Eight years ago, these two men committed medical fraud, forgery, and corporate extortion to manipulate my personal life, dissolve my marriage to Natalie Carter, and force a strategic merger with Vance Enterprises."

Murmurs erupted across the table. Board members leaned forward, examining the bank transfers showing millions moving from Brooks's shell companies into clinic accounts.

"This is a fabrication! A desperate smear campaign!" Senator Brooks shouted, standing up and slamming his hand on the table. "I am a United States Senator! I will have you sued for defamation!"

"You won't be suing anyone, Senator," spoke up the lead federal prosecutor stepping forward. "Richard Brooks and Julian Vance, you are under federal arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, corporate espionage, and obstruction of justice. Federal agents are currently executing search warrants at your residences and offices."

The boardroom descended into absolute chaos. Two armed federal marshals entered through the side doors. Julian slumped back into his leather chair, all the color draining from his face as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. Senator Brooks sputtered curses, his political clout vanishing in an instant as he was escorted out of the room in shame.

Evelyn sat frozen, looking at me with eyes filled with panic and disbelief. "Lucas... please... I didn't know the full extent of what my father did! You have to believe me!"

"You knew enough, Evelyn," I said quietly, looking down at her. "You viewed my life, my marriage, and my potential children as chess pieces in a corporate game. My attorneys have already filed for annulment based on fraud. You will receive what is stipulated in the prenuptial agreement regarding fraudulent inducement—which is absolutely nothing. Good day, Evelyn."

As security escorted Evelyn out, I turned to the remaining board members. The room was deathly quiet, every director looking at me with newfound awe and dread.

"Now," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table. "Let us discuss the future of Carter Global. Because effective immediately, this company is returning to its founding principles: integrity, accountability, and real human legacy."
