Chapter 3 - Poison in the Pedigree

The image glowing on my smartphone screen was a death warrant for the life I thought I knew. I held the screen in front of Julian's pale face. The legal advisor who had stood by my family for twenty years shrank back, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps.

"Explain this, Julian," I commanded, my voice dangerously calm. "Explain why my father's legal counsel signed a document authorizing the fabrication of my medical records eight years ago, co-signed by Richard Brooks."

Evelyn's eyes darted to the screen. For the first time since I had known her, the polished, aristocratic composure faded from her face, replaced by genuine shock—or fear. "Lucas, what is that? My father would never—"

"Shut up, Evelyn!" I snapped, turning on her with a fierce gaze. "Your father was the primary architect of the Vance-Brooks merger. Eight years ago, Carter Global was rapidly expanding, but I was stubbornly devoted to Natalie. We were building a quiet life. But as long as I was married to a middle-class schoolteacher, your family and Julian couldn't pull me into the political and financial syndicate you wanted. And if Natalie had given me an heir, my entire estate would have been locked into a private family trust forever."

Julian smoothed his coat with shaking hands, attempting to regain his professional footing. "Lucas... you must understand the broader context. Eight years ago, your father was dying. The company was vulnerable to hostile takeovers. Natalie was a lovely woman, but she lacked the political backing required to safeguard a legacy like Carter Global. Senator Brooks offered a multi-billion-dollar government contract portfolio, but only on the condition of a permanent blood alliance between your families."

"So you bribed a fertility clinic to tell me I was shootin' blanks?" I stepped right into Julian's personal space, towering over him. "You let me believe I was incapable of being a father? You drove me to abandon the woman I loved because you thought she was defective?!"

"We did what was necessary to secure the empire!" Julian blurted out, losing his cool. "And it worked! Look at what you've built, Lucas! You are one of the most powerful men in North America! None of this would exist if you had stayed trapped in a modest suburb raising children with a schoolteacher!"

A heavy silence fell across the hallway. Natalie stood holding Ethan and Maya, listening to the horrifying truth unfold. Her face was pale, but her posture remained resolute. The mystery of her ruined marriage—the sudden coldness, the tragic ending—was finally laid bare. It wasn't that I had stopped loving her. It was that we had been systematically destroyed by corporate predators wearing tailored suits.

"You monsters," Natalie whispered softly. "You let me believe my body had failed. You let me cry myself to sleep for years thinking I couldn't give my husband a family."

Evelyn stepped forward, her voice tight and defensive. "Natalie, let's be pragmatic. Whatever happened eight years ago was a business decision made by elder executives. You have raised these children comfortably, I assume? Lucas can arrange a very generous settlement—tens of millions of dollars—to ensure they go to the finest schools. But we must manage this discreetly. Lucas is currently finalizing a four-billion-dollar acquisition of Vance Enterprises. Any public scandal involving illegitimate heirs and medical fraud will destroy the stock price!"

I turned to Evelyn, feeling an overwhelming wave of disgust. "Illegitimate heirs? They are my children, Evelyn. My blood. And as of this second, the acquisition of Vance Enterprises is dead."

Evelyn gasped, stepping back as if slapped. "Lucas! You can't be serious! That deal involves my family's entire portfolio! If you pull out now, Vance Enterprises will face a liquidity crisis within forty-eight hours!"

"Then prepare for a crisis," I said coldly. "Because I am liquidating every joint asset held between Carter Global and the Brooks family. And I am filing for divorce."

"You can't do that!" Evelyn yelled, her aristocratic dignity completely shattering into ugly desperation. "We have a prenuptial agreement! You signed away thirty percent of your liquid capital if you initiate a dissolution without cause!"

"I have cause," I replied, pointing to the phone. "Conspiracy, fraud, and corporate espionage. I will spend every dime I own to ensure your father and Julian end up behind bars."

I turned my back on Evelyn and Julian, who stood frozen in horror as security guards approached to handle the scene. I walked over to Natalie and knelt down in front of the twins. For the first time, I was at eye level with my children. Ethan looked at me cautiously, while Maya reached out a tiny hand and touched the sleeve of my suit coat.

"Are you really our dad?" Ethan asked, his small voice cutting straight through my hardened heart.

Tears spilled over my eyes, hot and unbidden. "I am, buddy," I whispered, my voice choking with emotion. "I am your dad. And I am so, so sorry it took me so long to find you."

Maya smiled shyly. "Mom told us you were a superhero who was away on a long mission."

I looked up at Natalie, my heart breaking anew. Even after everything I had done—even after I broke her heart and left her in the cold—she had never taught our children to hate me. She had preserved my memory as something noble in their minds.

"Natalie," I said, standing up. "Please. Let me take you and the kids away from here. Not to my penthouse, not to corporate offices. Somewhere safe. We need to talk, and I need a chance to fix the horrific wrongs of my past."

Natalie looked at her children, then at me. For the first time in eight years, the icy barrier in her eyes began to thaw. "Alright, Lucas. But this isn't about us. This is about them."
