Chapter 2 - The Threads of Betrayal

The unexpected presence of my current wife and my closest legal advisor in the sterile hospital corridor shattered the fragile moment between Natalie and me. Evelyn stopped ten feet away, her posture impeccable, her eyes sweeping over Natalie, then over the two young children sitting near the nurse's station. A flicker of something dark and razor-sharp crossed Evelyn's face before she smoothed her features into a mask of polite concern.

"Lucas," Evelyn said softly, her voice cool and measured. "I became worried when you rushed out of the penthouse without a word. Julian said you received an anonymous text regarding... an urgent matter. I didn't realize that matter involved your ex-wife."

Julian Vance stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. Julian had been my father's legal counsel before becoming mine. He knew every intimate detail of the Carter family's assets, trusts, and personal histories. "Lucas, you shouldn't be here without counsel," Julian warned softly, touching my elbow. "If there are claims being made regarding parentage or financial obligations from a dissolved marriage, we need to handle this through formal channels, not in a public hospital hallway."

"Nobody is making financial claims, Julian!" Natalie snapped, her voice trembling with indignity. She stood tall, shielding the view of her children from Evelyn and Julian. "I didn't invite Lucas here. I didn't send any text message. I was here because Maya had a severe asthma attack this afternoon. That is the only reason we are in this hospital."

I spun around to face Julian, my mind racing. "Julian, how did you know I was here? I didn't tell you or Evelyn about the text message."

Julian paused for a fraction of a second, his eyes shifting slightly toward Evelyn before returning to me. "Your security detail flagged your erratic driving trajectory from the private airport, Lucas. As your legal guardian in corporate affairs, I have a duty to ensure your personal safety and protect Carter Global from public scandal."

"Is that what this is to you, Julian? A potential corporate scandal?" I stepped closer to my lawyer, my voice lowering to a dangerous register. "Eight years ago, you handled the medical records and privacy agreements during my fertility evaluations with Dr. Harrison in Chicago. You were the one who personally retrieved the lab results and handed them to me."

Julian's expression remained calm, though a fine bead of sweat appeared near his hairline. "Lucas, those were certified medical files from a top-tier clinic. I simply delivered the paperwork provided by the medical staff."

"Well, those files were fake," I stated coldly. "I was tested today in New York by three independent pathologists. There is nothing wrong with me. There never was."

Evelyn took a step closer, placing a gloved hand gently on my arm. Her touch, which once offered comfort, now felt suffocating. "Lucas, darling, you're upset. You've had a stressful week with the board meetings and the upcoming merger with Vance Enterprises. Perhaps you are misinterpreting these new tests. Or perhaps this doctor in New York made an error. Let's go home and discuss this calmly."

I looked down at Evelyn's hand, then up at her immaculate face. She was the daughter of Richard Brooks, a former senator and major shareholder in Vance Enterprises. My marriage to her four years ago had solidified a massive commercial alliance, elevating Carter Global into a multi-billion-dollar titan. It was a marriage built on mutual respect, elegance, and strategic alignment—or so I had believed. But looking at her now, standing beside Julian, a terrifying suspicion began to root itself in my mind.

"I'm not going anywhere, Evelyn," I said quietly. I turned back to Natalie. "Natalie, please. I need to know."

Natalie looked at Evelyn, then at Julian, her expression hardening into steel. She saw the corporate wolves circling, just as she had seen them eight years ago when she was pushed out of my life without a dime of the Carter fortune—a fortune she had never asked for anyway. She took a deep breath, walked over to the play table, and took Ethan and Maya by their hands.

"They are your children, Lucas," Natalie said clearly, her voice echoing down the corridor so that every person present heard it. "Ethan Lucas Carter and Maya Grace Carter. I found out I was pregnant three weeks after you signed those divorce papers and kicked me out of our home. I tried to call you. I came to your office in Chicago. But Mr. Vance here had his security team block me at the lobby doors. I was handed a restraining order threat and told that if I ever bothered you again, you would ruin my family's small publishing business."

I felt as if the floor had dropped out beneath me. I stared at Julian in absolute horror. "You did what?"

"Lucas, listen to me," Julian stammered, his composure finally cracking. "At that time, your mental state was fragile. The divorce was finalized. An unverified pregnancy claim right after a settlement would have destroyed the valuation during our public offering—"

"You threatened the woman I loved?!" I roared, lunging forward. I grabbed Julian by the lapels of his expensive wool coat, slamming him against the wall. Nurses shouted, and security guards began moving down the hall toward us. "You blocked her from telling me I had children?!"

"Lucas, stop!" Evelyn cried out, trying to pull me back. "Think about your reputation! Think about the company!"

"To hell with the company!" I hissed, releasing Julian, who slumped against the wall, gasping for air. I turned back to Natalie, my eyes burning with tears I hadn't shed in decades. "Natalie... I swear to God on my life, I never knew. I never saw a restraining order. I never knew you came to my office."

May you like

Natalie looked at me, her eyes filled with a painful mixture of lingering love and deep, historical sorrow. "It doesn't change the past seven years, Lucas. You weren't there when they took their first steps. You weren't there when Maya spent nights in the ICU with asthma. You weren't there. You were building your empire."

Before I could respond, my phone chimed again. A second text message arrived from the same unknown number. I opened it with shaking fingers. It was an image of an old internal document from Vance Enterprises dated eight years ago. The header read: Project Inheritance: Carter Medical Record Alteration Protocol. At the bottom of the document were two signatures: Julian Vance... and Senator Richard Brooks, Evelyn's father.
