Chapter 4 - The Shadow War

I moved Natalie and the twins to a private, highly secured estate I owned in the quiet hills outside Evanston, Illinois. It was a place unknown to the press, far away from the prying eyes of society reporters and corporate spies. For the first forty-eight hours, I completely cut myself off from Carter Global. I turned off my primary phone, ignored corporate communications, and devoted every waking moment to learning about the two seven-year-olds who carried my blood.

I learned that Ethan loved building complex Lego structures and possessed a mind for spatial logic that rivaled top engineers. I learned that Maya was a gifted pianist who possessed Natalie’s gentle empathy and a fiery determination whenever she attempted a difficult piece of music. Sitting on the carpet of the living room, building plastic castles with Ethan while listening to Maya practice scales on the grand piano, I experienced a pure, unadulterated joy that billions of dollars in enterprise value had never provided me.

Natalie watched us from the kitchen doorway, holding two mugs of tea. The exhaustion that had weighed on her at the hospital was beginning to lift, replaced by a cautious calm. I walked over to her, taking one of the mugs.

"Thank you," I said softly. "For keeping them safe. For raising them into such extraordinary human beings."

"It wasn't easy, Lucas," Natalie replied, looking out the window at the autumn leaves falling across the lawn. "When you left, I had nothing. My pride wouldn't let me ask your family for help, especially after Julian's threats. I moved back to my hometown, took a job editing educational books, and lived in a small two-bedroom apartment. There were nights I didn't know if I could afford their medical bills or preschool tuition."

Every word felt like a physical knife in my chest. "I was living in a fifty-million-dollar penthouse while my children lacked basic security," I said, my voice thick with self-loathing. "I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you, Natalie. Not just with money, but with my presence."

"Lucas, you are fighting a war right now," Natalie warned gently. "I've seen the news. Wall Street is in a panic."

She was right. On the third day, I reactivated my secure private terminal. The financial world was in absolute chaos. News of my abrupt departure from the Vance Enterprises merger had sent stock prices tumbling. Evelyn's father, Senator Richard Brooks, had launched an aggressive smear campaign in the media, accusing me of mental instability and breach of fiduciary duty. Julian Vance was attempting to rally the board of Carter Global to strip me of my CEO position, citing personal misconduct.

Just then, my encrypted phone rang. It was Marcus Vance—Julian’s younger brother, but a man who had long broken ties with Julian’s corrupt syndicate. Marcus was a forensic private investigator and data analyst whom I had hired years ago for off-the-books intelligence.

"Lucas," Marcus's voice crackled over the line. "I found the source of the anonymous texts sent to you at the hospital."

"Who was it?" I demanded.

"It was Dr. Harrison's former head nurse, Clara Higgins," Marcus revealed. "She was the one who personally forged the lab documents under Julian's orders eight years ago. She was paid a half-million dollars via an offshore shell company controlled by Senator Brooks. But she recently developed late-stage pancreatic cancer. On her deathbed, guilt consumed her. She tracked down Natalie's location, took the photo of the children at the hospital, and sent it to you along with the internal Vance memorandum."

"Is she willing to give a formal deposition?" I asked, my blood pumping with renewed determination.

"She already did," Marcus said. "I have a sworn, notarized affidavit signed by Clara Higgins, along with bank transaction records linking the funds directly to Senator Brooks's private account. Furthermore, I recovered the original, untampered fertility reports from 2018. They prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you were completely fertile, and that Natalie was healthy."

I gripped the phone tightly. "Do we have enough to dismantle Julian and Senator Brooks?"

"Legally? Yes," Marcus replied. "But they know you have the evidence now. Julian has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock at Carter Global headquarters in Chicago. They intend to invoke Article 7 of your corporate charter—a clause that allows the board to remove a founder if they are deemed unfit due to personal scandal. If they vote you out tomorrow, they will regain control of the voting shares and force the merger through."

I looked back at the living room. Ethan was proudly showing Natalie a finished Lego tower, while Maya laughed merrily. My family—the real, true legacy I had spent eight years mourning—was right here in front of me. I was not going to let a group of corporate thieves steal my life a second time.

"Prepare the documents, Marcus," I said coldly. "And notify the federal prosecutors at the Department of Justice. Tomorrow morning, I'm attending that board meeting."
