Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm

While Hannah fought for her life in the ICU, Caleb didn't sit idly by. During the agonizing hours of waiting, he channeled his grief into absolute destruction for the woman who had caused this. He called the city’s top criminal defense attorney and the chief of police, a personal acquaintance.

By noon the next day, Caleb met with Detective Miller in the hospital cafeteria. On the table lay Hannah’s phone, a medical report from Dr. Brooks, and the security footage Caleb had frantically pulled from his own home automation system.

"The footage from your porch is damning, Mr. Whitmore," Detective Miller said, tapping his notebook. "It clearly shows your mother, Lorraine Whitmore, arriving at the house. It captures the audio of your wife screaming for help inside. It shows your mother entering, and then leaving forty minutes later with a phone in her hand, smiling. More importantly, we have the recorded phone logs from Dr. Brooks' office showing she impersonated your wife to cancel emergency medical services."

"Is it enough to put her away?" Caleb asked, his eyes bloodshot, his jaw clenched tight.

"It’s reckless endangerment, tampering with medical emergencies, and identity fraud, compounded by the fact that it resulted in critical injury to a mother and an unborn child. Under state law, this carries severe prison time," the detective confirmed. "We’ve issued a warrant for her arrest. Officers are at her apartment now."

Caleb nodded grimly. He felt no remorse for his mother. She had attempted a slow, cruel murder of his entire life, and she would pay for every second of agony Hannah suffered.

Just then, Caleb’s phone buzzed. It was Dr. Brooks.

"Caleb, get up to the ICU immediately," the doctor’s voice was urgent. "Hannah is waking up. But there are complications."

Caleb stood up so fast he knocked his coffee over, sprinting toward the elevators. His heart hammered in his chest. Please, God, let her remember me. Let her forgive me.
