Chapter 3 - Fighting for Breath

The Intensive Care Unit was a symphony of terrifying sounds—the rhythmic beeping of monitors, the mechanical hiss of a ventilator, and the soft footsteps of nurses moving in the dark.

Caleb sat by Hannah’s bedside, holding her pale, cold hand against his cheek. She looked so fragile beneath the heavy white blankets. A thick tube ran into her throat, breathing for her. There were no signs of the vibrant, laughing woman he had kissed goodbye just three days ago.

"I’m sorry, Hannah," Caleb whispered, his tears soaking into her hospital gown. "I’m so sorry I didn't answer. I’m sorry I didn't see through her sooner. Please don't leave me. I can't do this without you."

A gentle knock on the glass door broke his grief. A neonatal nurse stood there, looking sympathetic. "Mr. Whitmore? Your son’s condition has stabilized slightly in the NICU. He’s awake, but he’s very weak. The doctor thinks... it might help if he hears his father's voice."

Caleb looked back at Hannah, torn between his wife and his child. He kissed her forehead gently. "I’ll be right back, my love. I’m going to see our boy."

In the Neonatal ICU, the sight was even more heartbreaking. Inside a clear plastic incubator lay a tiny, fragile baby boy, covered in wires and tubes. He was so small, his skin translucent. A monitor above him showed his erratic, struggling heart rate.

Caleb reached through the small circular openings of the incubator, his large, trembling hand gently cupping the baby’s tiny head.

"Hey there, buddy," Caleb choked out, trying to stay strong. "I’m your dad. You are so brave, just like your mommy. She’s fighting right now, and I need you to fight too. Don't let her go alone. We are supposed to be a family."

As if hearing his voice, the tiny baby’s fingers twitched, moving weakly until they brushed against Caleb’s thumb, latching on with a faint, desperate grip. At that exact moment, the chaotic beeping of the heart monitor began to slow down, settling into a steady, healthy rhythm.

The NICU nurse gasped softly. "Look at that. His oxygen levels are rising. He knows you're here, Mr. Whitmore."

For the first time since he had walked into his bloody bedroom, a small glimmer of hope ignited in Caleb’s chest. But the battle was far from over.
