Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN AT WILMINGTON

The rain over Wilmington Port was heavy and cold, mixing with the dark, oily runoff of the shipping yards.

Inside Warehouse 4, the air was thick with the smell of diesel, rust, and impending violence. Warren Pike, a barrel-chested man with greasy gray hair and silver-rimmed glasses, paced angrily past rows of stacked shipping crates. Miles Carter stood near a bank of security monitors, his face dark with rage.

"The federal servers just issued an arrest warrant for me!" Pike screamed, slamming his fist onto a steel table. "How did they get the Delaware corporate filings, Miles?! You said those were sealed!"

"I don't know!" Miles yelled back, pulling a heavy tactical weapon from his holster. "The woman must have leaked them before she left Greenwich!"

"You idiot!" Pike spat. "You brought a war to my doorstep! We need to get to the boat now!"

Suddenly, the heavy corrugated steel doors of the warehouse were blown inward with a deafening explosion.

BOOM!

Smoke, shattered metal, and blinding white flashbang light erupted into the vast space.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Dozen of heavily armed FBI SWAT operatives poured through the breached entrance, laser sights cutting through the smoke. At the exact same time, from the rear utility entrance, Adrian Cole’s dark SUV crashed through the glass barrier, spinning out onto the concrete floor.

Adrian leaped out from the driver's side, his SIG Sauer drawn, eyes locked onto Miles Carter through the swirling fog.

"MILES!" Adrian roared, his voice echoing like an enraged demon through the cavernous warehouse.

Miles turned, his eyes widening in terror as he saw his former boss advancing on him, flanked by gunfire from federal agents and Pike’s mercenary guards.

The warehouse exploded into three-way gunfire. Pike’s men fired frantically at the advancing FBI line, while Adrian pushed directly through the crossfire, focused entirely on Miles.

Miles scrambled behind a forklift, firing wild shots at Adrian. "Adrian! Listen to me! Pike set it up! It was Pike!"

"You took my life, Miles!" Adrian screamed, returning fire, the heavy bullets punching through the metal frame of the forklift, forcing Miles to retreat toward a narrow loading dock ledge over the freezing river waters below. "You tried to poison my family!"

Adrian rounded the corner of the loading dock, stepping into the open. Miles lunged out from behind a steel pillar, swinging his weapon, but Adrian was faster.

A single, heavy gunshot echoed above the chaotic noise of the tactical raid.

BANG!

Miles froze. He looked down at his chest, where a dark stain was rapidly spreading across his pristine tactical vest. He looked up at Adrian, his eyes wide with disbelief and horror.

"She... she outsmarted us all, didn't she?" Miles wheezed, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

"She’s smarter than both of us combined," Adrian said quietly, his eyes cold and empty.

Miles lost his footing, stumbling backward over the wet edge of the loading dock, plunging thirty feet down into the dark, churning waters of the Delaware River below, swallowed instantly by the current.

Across the warehouse floor, Warren Pike was already on his knees, his hands behind his head, pinned down by three FBI SWAT officers.

Adrian stood alone on the edge of the loading dock, his gun hanging loosely at his side. The smoke was beginning to clear. Dozens of red laser sights centered on his chest and head.

"DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON YOUR KNEES! NOW!" the FBI tactical team leader commanded through a bullhorn.

Adrian looked up at the rafters of the warehouse, then down at his hands—hands that had built a criminal empire, hands that had held a diamond ring meant for the wrong woman, hands that had lost the only thing that ever truly mattered.

Slowly, deliberately, Adrian dropped his weapon onto the concrete. He raised his hands into the air and knelt down into the cold, wet soot of the warehouse floor.

As the federal agents rushed forward, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists, Adrian looked out through the open loading bay doors toward the north.

He didn't fight. He didn't scream. He simply allowed himself to be dragged away, knowing that somewhere out there, far beyond the reach of blood, crime, and ruined men, his wife and daughter were finally free.
