Chapter 4 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

The Eastern District Court of New York did not usually process emergency federal warrants on Boxing Day, but when the documents arrived on the desk of Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance, the rules were suspended.
The digital package contained undeniable, court-admissible proof of an international money-laundering network operating out of the ports of Newark, Philadelphia, and Boston. Included were wire transfer receipts, encrypted communications, and land deeds linking Adrian Cole, Miles Carter, and Warren Pike to a dozen federal felonies.
By noon on December 26th, federal seals were placed on three of Adrian’s primary shipping terminals in New Jersey.
In Greenwich, the news hit like a megaton bomb.
Adrian sat in his living room while television news anchors broadcast live footage of FBI agents carrying boxes of files out of his corporate headquarters in Manhattan. Brooke Lawson was sitting on the sofa, sobbing hysterically, surrounded by packed designer luggage.
"Adrian, what is happening?!" Brooke shrieked, clutching her gold phone. "The bank just frozen my credit cards! My agent says the press is calling my apartment building! They’re saying you’re going to be indicted!"
Adrian didn't even look at her. He was staring at his phone screen. Hank had just sent a encrypted message:
Miles met Warren Pike at Wilmington Port Warehouse 4. They have fifteen armed men on site. They are preparing to move on the Boston safe houses.
Adrian stood up, pulling a heavy black tactical coat over his shoulders and checking the magazine of his custom SIG Sauer pistol.
"Adrian, where are you going?!" Brooke screamed, catching his sleeve. "You can't leave me here! The reporters are at the gates!"
Adrian turned his head and looked at Brooke with pure disgust. The glamour that had captivated him for eleven months had evaporated, leaving behind nothing but a shallow, greedy nuisance. He realized now how utterly blind he had been. He had traded a woman of brilliant intellect, fierce loyalty, and true grace for a shiny trinket.
"Get out of my house, Brooke," Adrian said coldly, snatching his arm away. "Take your three-carat ring and sell it. Because by tomorrow, everything with the name Cole attached to it will be seized by the government."
Without waiting for her reply, Adrian walked out the door, flanked by Hank and four heavily armed former military operatives who remained loyal to his paycheck.
Two hours later, a three-vehicle convoy was racing down I-95 toward Delaware. Adrian wasn't running from the feds. He knew his legal life was over. But before he went to a federal penitentiary, he was going to execute the man who had ruined his family and tried to steal his life's work.
Meanwhile, at the Pittsfield clinic, Claire was standing by the window, fully dressed in a warm maternity sweater and boots.
Dr. Sarah Vance had removed the IV line an hour ago. "Your vitals are stable, Claire. But you are still high risk. You cannot handle physical violence or extreme shock."
"I won't have to," Claire said, turning around with a calm, serene expression.
Rebecca entered the room, holding two secure satellite phones. "The feds just raided the Newark terminal. Warren Pike’s assets in Philadelphia are being frozen as we speak. Miles and Pike are trapped at the Wilmington warehouse, unaware that the FBI has already surrounded the perimeter based on the tip I dropped twenty minutes ago."
Claire walked over to the desk and picked up one of the satellite phones. "It’s time to call my husband."
In the back of his dark SUV speeding through Maryland, Adrian’s phone rang. The screen displayed an unknown, encrypted number.
Adrian answered instantly. "Speak."
"Hello, Adrian."
The sound of Claire’s voice hit Adrian like a physical blow. He froze, his breath catching in his throat. The noise of the SUV’s engine seemed to fade into total silence.
"Claire..." Adrian choked out, his hand gripping the phone so hard his knuckles turned white. "Claire, where are you? Are you safe? Is the baby—"
"The baby is fine, Adrian," Claire interrupted, her tone devoid of any emotion, cold as winter ice. "No thanks to you."
"Claire, listen to me!" Adrian pleaded, his voice cracking—a rare display of raw emotion that shocked Hank sitting in the driver's seat. "I was a fool. Brooke was a mistake—a terrible, stupid mistake. Miles betrayed us both! He took the money, he set up Pike, he’s been planning to murder me!"
"I know," Claire said softly. "I knew eleven months ago, Adrian. I knew about Brooke. I knew about Miles. I knew about the Delaware accounts."
Adrian swallowed hard, a cold sweat breaking out across his neck. "You... you knew?"
"I am a financial analyst, Adrian. Did you really think you could hide an entire second life from me in my own home?" Claire let out a soft, dry laugh. "You thought I was just a hostess. You thought I was content hanging pine garlands and arranging seating charts while you played mafia kingpin. You forgot who I was before I wore your ring."
"Claire, please," Adrian begged, tears stinging his eyes. "Tell me where you are. Let me fix this. I’ll hand over the empire, I’ll take the federal fall, just let me see my daughter. Let me make sure you’re safe."
"You can't fix this, Adrian," Claire said firmly. "You built a life on violence, lies, and disrespect. You humiliated me publicly on Christmas Eve in front of two hundred people. You thought I would cry in my bedroom. Instead, I tore your world down to the bedrock."
"Where is the master ledger, Claire?" Adrian asked softly. "Miles is going after it. He thinks you have it."
"The master ledger is currently on the desk of the Federal Prosecutor in Manhattan," Claire revealed smoothly. "And right now, Miles and Warren Pike are sitting inside Warehouse 4 at the Wilmington Port. And Adrian?"
"What?" Adrian whispered.
"The FBI hostiles tactical team is already outside that warehouse," Claire said. "And I gave them your vehicle details too. If you go to Wilmington, you drive straight into a federal trap."
Adrian stared out the rain-streaked window of the SUV as the Wilmington skyline appeared in the distance. He realized the terrifying beauty of Claire’s plan. She hadn't just run away. She had maneuvered all three of her enemies—Adrian, Miles, and Pike—into the exact same killing box, leaving them to be swept up by the law or destroyed by each other.
"Why didn't you just leave, Claire?" Adrian asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Why destroy everything?"
"Because you took five years of my life, Adrian," Claire replied softly. "And you tried to make my daughter born into a kingdom of blood and deceit. I am clearing the slate so she can breathe."
"Claire—"
"Goodbye, Adrian. Have a Merry Christmas."
The line went dead.
Adrian lowered the phone slowly. He looked up at Hank in the driver's seat.
"Boss?" Hank asked nervously, seeing the hollow, defeated look in Adrian’s eyes. "We’re two miles from Wilmington Port. Do we turn around?"
May you like
Adrian looked out at the flashing red and blue lights appearing on the highway ahead—federal blockade barricades closing off the port exits.
Adrian let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "No, Hank. Keep driving. Let's go see the show my wife put on for us."
