Chapter 2 - THE HUNT BEGINS

By 3:00 AM on Christmas morning, the celebration at the Cole mansion had transformed into a command center for a hunt. Guests had been dismissed with vague excuses about a family emergency. The ballroom was littered with half-empty champagne glasses and wilted pine garlands.
In the private study, Adrian sat behind his desk, surrounded by four of his most ruthless lieutenants. Maps of the tri-state area were spread across the leather blotter.
"She’s seven months pregnant, for God’s sake!" Adrian bellowed, his voice hoarse. "She has no family left. Her parents died four years ago. She has no friends I don't control. How does a pregnant woman vanish from a locked estate without a single camera catching her?!"
Miles Carter stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out into the swirling blizzard. His mind was racing far faster than Adrian’s. Miles wasn't just worried about Claire escaping; he was terrified of what she might have seen before she left.
"Boss," Miles said, turning around, forcing his voice to sound calm and reassuring. "She’s emotional. She saw you with Brooke, she panicked, and she took off. She’s probably staying at a hotel in Manhattan under a fake name. I have guys checking every boutique hotel from SoHo to the Upper East Side."
"She didn't take her credit cards, Miles," Adrian said, leaning forward, his eyes bloodshot. "I checked the account notifications. Zero activity. She didn't take her car. She didn't take her clothes. She took her laptop, her passport, and the encryption drive from my safe."
Adrian stood up slowly, walking over to Miles until he was inches from his security chief's face. "How did she get the code to my safe, Miles?"
Miles didn't flinch. "I don't know, boss. You're the only one who had it."
"Or someone who had access to my office when I wasn't here," Adrian whispered softly, a dangerous edge creeping into his tone. "Find her, Miles. Find her before she talks to the feds. Because if the Department of Justice gets their hands on that drive, none of us are seeing the sun again."
While Adrian’s men tore through New York City, Claire was nearly two hundred miles away, sitting in the back of a small, warm diner off Interstate 90 in western Massachusetts.
The diner was empty except for a sleepy trucker sitting at the counter. The smell of frying bacon and cheap coffee filled the air. Outside, the snow was falling in thick, white sheets, blanketing the highway.
Claire sat in a corner booth, wrapped in Thomas’s wool coat. Across from her sat Rebecca Shaw.
Rebecca was in her late fifties, with sharp gray eyes, silver-streaked hair pulled into a tight bun, and a tailored wool coat that screamed quiet authority. On the table between them sat a silver laptop and two cups of chamomile tea.
"You're sure no one followed you?" Rebecca asked, her eyes scanning the snow-covered parking lot outside.
"Thomas took care of the estate blind spot," Claire said, her voice quiet but firm. "I switched vehicles twice. I left the van in a commuter lot in Hartford and took a rental under the alias you provided. Adrian’s men are looking for an angry, hysterical pregnant woman in Manhattan. They won't look toward Boston for at least forty-eight hours."
Rebecca opened the laptop, inserted the encrypted flash drive Claire had provided, and began entering a series of complex passwords. The screen flickered to life, illuminating her sharp features with a pale blue glow.
Columns of data began to stream across the monitor. Bank account numbers, shell company registries in the Cayman Islands, property deeds in Panama, and wire transfer logs spanning three years.
Rebecca let out a low whistle. "My God, Claire..."
"It’s all there," Claire said, leaning back, her hands instinctively cradling her stomach. "Adrian thinks he’s an criminal mastermind, but he’s lazy with his record-keeping. He trusted Miles to handle the operational details. And Miles took advantage of that trust."
Rebecca pointed a long finger at a cluster of transactions highlighted in red. "Look at these wire transfers. Over the last fourteen months, twelve million dollars moved from Adrian’s primary shipping accounts in Newark to a logistics firm registered in Delaware."
"Delaware firm owned by Warren Pike," Claire supplied smoothly. "Pike is Adrian’s primary rival in the Philadelphia port system. Miles wasn't just stealing Adrian’s money, Rebecca. He’s supplying Pike with the capital needed to buy out Adrian’s dockworkers. Miles is setting up an assassination. Once Adrian is eliminated, Miles takes over the territory with Pike’s backing."
Rebecca looked up from the screen, staring at Claire with newfound respect. "You didn't just steal your husband's fortune, Claire. You uncovered a coup."
"I took what belonged to me and my daughter," Claire said coldness in her voice. "Adrian gave five years of my life to his mistress and his pride. He left me to rot in that house while he built an empire on blood. I took thirty percent of his total liquid assets—roughly eighteen million dollars—and moved it into untraceable off-shore trusts registered under my daughter’s new legal name."
"And the rest of the data?" Rebecca asked. "The evidence implicating Miles and Warren Pike?"
"That is my weapon," Claire said, her hazel eyes hardening like flint. "If Adrian finds me, I ruin him with the feds. If Miles finds me, I give the data to Adrian and let him destroy Miles himself. Either way, they are trapped in a box of their own making."
Suddenly, Claire felt a sharp, heavy cramp ripple across her lower abdomen. She gasped, grabbing the edge of the Formica table, her knuckles turning white.
"Claire?" Rebecca asked, instantly alert, reaching across the table. "What's wrong?"
"The baby..." Claire panted, sweat breaking out across her forehead. "The stress... it’s too much."
Rebecca stood up immediately, grabbing her purse and the laptop. "We’re five miles from a private clinic in Pittsfield. The doctor there is an old friend—completely off the grid, no records sent to state registries. Can you walk?"
Claire bit her lip, waiting for the contraction to pass. She looked down at her hands, which were shaking violently. "I have to walk, Rebecca. I have a daughter to raise."
As Rebecca helped Claire out into the freezing storm, two hundred miles away in Greenwich, Adrian received his first piece of real intelligence.
It wasn't from Miles. It was from his personal IT specialist, a young hacker Adrian kept on a retainer in Brooklyn.
"Boss," the specialist's voice crackled over Adrian's encrypted line. "I tracked the digital signature of the safe's secondary override code. It wasn't accessed from inside the house on Christmas Eve."
Adrian froze in his study. "What are you talking about?"
"The safe was unlocked remotely using a master backdoor key three days ago," the hacker explained. "Someone copied the biometric hash weeks ago. Boss... the person who authorized the remote override wasn't your wife. It was Miles Carter's personal device."

Adrian felt the world tilt on its axis. He slowly lowered the phone, turning his head to look through the open doorway toward the grand staircase where Miles was currently issuing orders to his men.
Claire hadn't just run away. She had left Adrian in a house full of snakes.
