Chapter 3 - THE WEB UNRAVELS

The private clinic outside Pittsfield was housed in a converted nineteenth-century farmhouse surrounded by towering pine trees laden with heavy snow. Inside, the warm scent of eucalyptus and clean linen provided a stark contrast to the icy terror lingering in Claire’s mind.

Dr. Sarah Vance, a sharp-eyed woman in her sixties with gentle hands, performed the ultrasound while Rebecca stood guard near the window, her hand resting near her handbag.

"The baby is under distress, Claire," Dr. Vance said, her voice calm but serious as she moved the transducer over Claire’s swollen abdomen. "Your blood pressure is dangerously high. Early labor is trying to start. You are seven months along—if this baby comes now, she will need intensive care that we cannot provide here without alerting the regional hospital network."

Claire clutched the paper sheet covering her legs, tears finally slipping down her cheeks. "No... please. She can't come yet. It’s not safe."

"Then you need to stop moving," Dr. Vance instructed, wiping the cold gel from Claire's stomach. "I’m putting you on a drip to suppress the contractions and lower your blood pressure. You need absolute bed rest for the next seventy-two hours. If you stress yourself further, you risk placental abruption."

Claire looked up at Rebecca. "We can't stay here for three days. Adrian's men..."

"Adrian’s men don't know about this place," Rebecca interrupted smoothly, walking over to the bed. "I’ve used Sarah’s clinic for high-profile whistleblowers and fleeing corporate executives for a decade. Not a single piece of paper leaves this room. You are going to rest, Claire. Let me handle the chess board for a few days."

Claire closed her eyes, exhausted beyond measure. "The drive..."

"Is safe in my possession," Rebecca assured her. "Rest, Claire. Focus on your daughter."

While Claire lay hooked to an IV line in Massachusetts, Greenwich was devolving into a psychological war zone.

Inside the Cole mansion, the atmosphere was thick with paranoia. Adrian sat in his study with the door locked. On his desk sat two things: a loaded .45 caliber pistol and a bottle of scotch.

He knew now that Miles Carter was a traitor. But Adrian was a pragmatic man. If he confronted Miles immediately without knowing where the money and the ledgers were, Miles’s loyalists within the estate guards would eliminate Adrian on the spot. Miles controlled twelve armed men inside the house. Adrian had only three men he was certain were loyal to him alone.

A soft knock sounded at the study door.

"Boss?" It was Miles. "We found a lead. A toll camera on the I-91 corridor caught a gray utility van matching the description of the gardener’s maintenance vehicle heading north toward Hartford around nine PM last night."

Adrian picked up the glass of scotch, took a slow sip, and carefully placed the glass back down. He forced his face into an expression of raw, unadulterated anger—the face Miles expected to see.

"Hartford?" Adrian barked, unlocking the door and pulling it open. "What the hell would she be doing in Hartford?"

Miles stood in the doorway, his eyes darting subtly around the study, taking in the empty safe and the gun on the desk. "She might be heading toward Boston, boss. She went to college up there. She has old contacts."

"Take six men and go to Hartford," Adrian ordered, stepping close to Miles, playing the role of the desperate husband to perfection. "Scour every train station, every bus depot. If she’s trying to get to Boston, cut her off before she reaches the state line."

Miles hesitated for a split second. "And you, boss? You should stay here where it’s secure."

"I’m staying here," Adrian said, his voice flat. "Brooke is hysterical downstairs. I have to deal with the press before news of Claire's disappearance leaks to the business journals. Just bring my wife home, Miles."

"Understood, boss," Miles said, offering a tight nod before turning and striding down the hallway.

As soon as Miles’s footsteps faded, Adrian turned to his loyal security chief, a silent veteran named Hank who had been standing in the shadows of the hallway.

"Is the tracker live?" Adrian whispered.

Hank pulled out a rugged smartphone. "Yes, boss. I planted a GPS beacon inside Miles's SUV while he was inside. If he heads toward Hartford, we’ll know. But if he branches off toward Philadelphia..."

"...then he’s going to meet Warren Pike," Adrian finished, his jaw clenching. "Follow him at a distance, Hank. The moment he meets Pike or finds Claire, you call me. We end this."

Two hours later, Miles Carter was not driving toward Hartford.

His dark SUV was speeding south along the New Jersey Turnpike, heading straight toward a secluded warehouse near the port of Wilmington, Delaware—Warren Pike’s main distribution hub.

Inside the SUV, Miles was on a satellite phone.

"She took the master ledger, Warren," Miles said, his voice laced with venom. "Every shell company, every off-shore routing number, every bribe log for the last five years. If she turns that drive over to the feds, Adrian is finished, but so are we."

"Does Adrian know you took the money?" Warren Pike’s rasping voice answered through the speaker.

"No," Miles lied. "He thinks she just snapped because of the proposal to Brooke. He’s sitting in Greenwich like a blind idiot, drinking himself to death. I sent half my guys on a wild goose chase to Hartford to keep him busy."

"Find the woman, Miles," Pike commanded coldly. "I don't care if she’s pregnant. I don't care if she’s bleeding in a ditch. Get that drive, kill her, and bring the data to me. Once we have the master ledger, we wipe out Adrian’s remaining loyalists and take the ports before New Year’s Day."

"I have my own contact working the Boston end," Miles smirked. "She won't make it out of New England alive."

What Miles didn't realize was that someone else was monitoring his satellite phone signal.

In the private clinic in Pittsfield, Rebecca Shaw sat at a desk in the hallway, watching a series of audio waveforms bounce across her laptop screen.

Thanks to the malware Claire had embedded in the estate's network before she fled, every call made from Miles’s registered devices was being mirrored directly to Rebecca’s encrypted server.

Rebecca listened to the recorded conversation between Miles and Warren Pike, her expression hardening with every passing second.

She closed the laptop, stood up, and walked softly into Claire’s room.

Claire was awake, the IV drip steadily pulsing into her arm. Her color had returned, though her eyes were shadowed with deep exhaustion.

"How are you feeling?" Rebecca asked gently.

"The contractions stopped," Claire whispered. "The baby is quiet now."

Rebecca sat on the edge of the bed, her face grave. "Claire, we have a development. Miles isn't searching for you to bring you back to Adrian. He’s searching for you to execute you on behalf of Warren Pike. He’s traced your initial route toward Massachusetts."

Claire didn't flinch. She had anticipated this. "And Adrian?"

"Adrian knows Miles betrayed him," Rebecca revealed. "He’s tracking Miles right now. They are heading toward a confrontation."

Claire looked out the window at the falling snow. A cold, calculating smile slowly touched her lips—the smile of a woman who had spent months orchestrating the ultimate trap.

"Good," Claire whispered, her hazel eyes gleaming in the dim light. "Let the monsters destroy each other. It’s time to leak the first batch of documents to the Department of Justice."
