Chapter 5: Rebuilding the Foundation

The fall of Helen Whitaker was swift and absolute. Stripped of her corporate power and publicly humiliated by the viral DNA revelations, she retreated to her estate in Palm Beach, entirely cut off from the Chicago social scene. Amelia Brooks’ family merger collapsed, leaving Brooks Holdings scrambling to repair their own public image after their attempts to sideline the triplets were exposed on national news.

But for Ryan, the real work was just beginning.

A month after the boardroom showdown, Ryan stood in the driveway of a beautiful, sprawling colonial home in Lincoln Park. The house was surrounded by ancient oak trees, a massive fenced backyard, and room enough for three children to run until they were exhausted.

Grace stood beside him, watching the moving men carry in boxes of toys and books.

"It's too much, Ryan," Grace whispered, looking up at the beautiful house. "I told you, I don't want your money. I just wanted them to have their father."

"It's not about the money, Grace," Ryan said softly, turning to face her. "For three years, I thought my life was successful because my bank account was growing. But the truth is, I was empty. I was trying to marry a woman I didn't love just to fill the silence you left behind."

He reached out, his hand gently cupping her chin, tilting her face up just like he used to. "I never stopped loving you, Grace. Even when I was angry, even when I was grieving. Seeing you under that bus shelter... it didn't ruin my life. It saved it."

Grace’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were warm. "I was so scared, Ryan. When your mother threatened me, I felt so small. I didn't think I could compete with your world."

"You don't have to compete with it," Ryan murmured, leaning down to press his forehead against hers. "You own it. We build a new world here. Together."

From the backyard, a sudden shout of laughter interrupted them. Liam had found the automatic lawn sprinklers, and within seconds, all three children were running through the water, their red raincoats completely forgotten as they splashed in the afternoon sun.
