Chapter 2: The House of Cards

The penthouse suite of the Whitaker Group headquarters was dead silent. Grace sat on the edge of a massive leather sofa, a oversized cashmere blanket draped over her shoulders, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea. The three toddlers—Liam, Maya, and Chloe—were currently sitting on the plush rug, happily eating gourmet cookies provided by Ryan's utterly bewildered executive secretary.

Ryan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the city skyline, his mind a chaotic war zone.

"I didn't know, Grace," Ryan said, his voice raw as he finally turned to face her. "I swear to you on my father’s memory. I never knew about the phone call. My mother told me you moved to Seattle and wanted a clean break."

"It doesn't change where we are now, Ryan," Grace said quietly, watching Liam build a tower out of high-end corporate coasters. "I didn't want this. I didn't want you to see us. I work as an assistant librarian at the city college. It’s tight, but we make it work. We were only at that bus stop because my car broke down this morning."

"You're living in a cramped apartment on the West Side while my children wear faded coats?" Ryan’s voice rose, a sudden, fierce protectiveness roaring to life inside him. "I am a billionaire, Grace! My children are supposed to inherit an empire, not wait for a delayed city bus in a thunderstorm!"

The double doors to the penthouse swung open before Grace could respond. Helen Whitaker walked in, looking every bit the ruthless matriarch of Chicago's oldest money. Close behind her was Amelia, her arms crossed, her expression a mix of fury and calculation.

"Ryan, what is the meaning of this madness?" Helen demanded, her sharp eyes instantly locking onto the three children on the floor. Her face drained of color for a fraction of a second before her expression hardened into pure granite. "Why did you cancel the proposal? And why is this woman in your office?"

Ryan walked over to his mother, his steps slow, deliberate, and terrifying. "Three years ago, Mom. Did you answer my phone?"

Helen didn't flinch. "I protected you, Ryan. She was a middle-class girl from Ohio who ruined your focus. When she called babbling about a pregnancy after the papers were signed, I knew exactly what she was doing. She wanted a payday."

"They are my children, Helen!" Ryan roared, the sound echoing off the glass walls. Liam whimpered, and Grace instantly rushed to scoop the boy into her arms, glare cutting through the older woman. "Look at him! Look at his eyes! You didn't protect me. You stole three years of my children's lives!"

Amelia stepped forward, her voice sweet but laced with venom. "Ryan, sweetie, let's think about this logically. The media will have a field day with this. A sudden secret family right when we're about to announce the merger between our companies? It's a PR nightmare. We can set up a quiet, private trust fund for... these children. A monthly allowance. But we need to proceed with our wedding."

Ryan looked at Amelia, seeing her clearly for the first time. She didn't see three innocent children; she saw a public relations liability. She didn't see his blood; she see a corporate merger.

He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the small velvet box, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. It skittered across the surface, stopping right in front of Amelia's manicured hands.

"There is no wedding, Amelia," Ryan said, his voice flat and absolute. "The merger is off. Get out of my office. Both of you."
