Chapter 3: The True Heir

Within forty-eight hours, the Whitaker family war had leaked to the press.

On Facebook and TikTok, a paparazzi photo of Ryan standing in the rain at the bus stop looking down at the triplets went completely viral. The caption read: “Chicago Billionaire Ryan Whitaker Discovers Secret Triplets with Ex-Wife.” The public reaction was overwhelming, with millions praising Ryan for abandoning his high-society proposal to protect his children, while Helen and Amelia were instantly cast as the villains of the high-society elite.

But Helen Whitaker did not build a real estate empire by backing down.

On Thursday morning, Ryan was served with legal documents at his private residence. His mother, using her significant influence on the board of the Whitaker Group, had filed an emergency motion to freeze Ryan's personal assets and strip him of his CEO title, citing "unstable emotional behavior damaging to shareholder value."

"She's going to try to prove you're unfit to lead the company, Ryan," his head legal counsel, David Vance, explained as they sat in Ryan's living room. "She's claiming that bringing three unverified children into the family lineage without a court-ordered DNA test is a liability to the trust."

"Then we give them the test," a voice called out from the hallway.

Grace walked into the room, her hair pulled back, looking exhausted but fiercely determined. She handed a sealed envelope to the lawyer. "I went to Northwestern Memorial yesterday morning. I had a rapid forensic DNA panel done for Liam, Maya, Chloe, and myself. All we need is Ryan's swab."

Ryan stood up, walking over to her. "Grace, you don't have to subject yourself to their scrutiny. I can fight my mother without dragging you into a legal circus."

"They called my children 'unverified liabilities,' Ryan," Grace said, her green eyes flashing with a dangerous light he hadn't seen since before their tragedy. "Nobody insults my babies. If your mother wants a war over the Whitaker legacy, let's show her who the real heirs are."

Ryan smiled, a genuine, hard laugh escaping his chest for the first time in three years. He took the swab from the lawyer and efficiently scraped the inside of his cheek.

"Submit it directly to the probate judge," Ryan ordered David. "And call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow at noon. Tell my mother I’ll be bringing some guests."
