Chapter 5 - A New Beginning

The Fontaine estate was quiet in the afternoon sun. The oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the grand halls during Bianca’s presence was completely gone, replaced by a calm, peaceful warmth.
In the small cottage at the edge of the estate grounds—where the domestic staff resided—Dileia Vance was packing her modest belongings into a battered cardboard box.
Following the events at the gala, the police had cleared her of all suspicion, and Rocco had paid her a generous bonus for her distress. However, Dileia felt it was time to leave. The estate held too many painful memories of humiliation, and she believed her presence would only remind Mr. Fontaine of his ex-fiancée's terrible betrayal.
She closed the box, taped the top, and wiped a stray strand of hair from her forehead.
A gentle knock sounded at her door.
Dileia opened it to find Rocco standing on the small porch. He was dressed casually in a charcoal sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed and approachable—a stark contrast to the intimidating mafia kingpin the city feared.
"Mr. Fontaine," Dileia said, surprised, bowing her head slightly. "Please, come in."
Rocco stepped inside the simple, immaculate room. His eyes fell upon the packed cardboard boxes standing near the door.
"You are leaving?" Rocco asked, a subtle note of disappointment touching his voice.
"My contract was completed after the gala, sir," Dileia explained softly, offering him a seat, though he remained standing. "And... I thought it would be better if I moved on. You have been very generous, but I don't want to cause any more trouble for your household."
"Trouble?" Rocco repeated, taking a step toward her. "Dileia, you didn't cause trouble. You were the victim of a venomous scheme, and yet you bore it with a level of courage I have rarely seen in my life."
Dileia lowered her gaze, her hands clasped tightly together. "I only did what was right, Mr. Fontaine. My parents taught me that no matter how poor you are, your character is the one thing no one can take from you."
Rocco looked at her intently. He saw the faint bruise on her cheek—a lingering mark from Bianca’s assault—and felt a deep surge of respect and warmth toward this resilient woman.
"I came here today to ask you to stay," Rocco said gently.
Dileia looked up in surprise. "Stay? As a housekeeper?"
"No," Rocco said, shaking his head. "Not as a housekeeper."
He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew the small, red velvet box. He held it out toward her.
Dileia hesitated, looking at the exquisite box. "Mr. Fontaine... what is this?"
"Open it," he invited quietly.
Dileia gently took the box and flipped open the brass clasp. Resting on the velvet cushion was the antique gold pocket watch, its surface gleaming under the warm light of the cottage lamp.
"This belonged to my father," Rocco explained, his voice deep and solemn. "It is the most valuable thing I own—not because of its gold, but because of what it represents. In my family, giving this watch to someone means offering them complete trust, absolute protection, and a place beside me as equal."
Dileia gasped, looking up at him with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Mr. Fontaine... I don't understand. I am just a maid. I have nothing—"
"You have everything that matters," Rocco interrupted softly, taking her small, rough hand in his broad, warm palm. "You have honesty, strength, and an unbreakable spirit. For years, I surrounded myself with people who wore designer clothes and spoke polite words, but carried knives behind their backs. You showed me what true nobility looks like."
Dileia felt warmth spreading through her chest, tears welling in her eyes—not tears of sadness, but of overwhelming relief and joy.
"I am offering you a new position, Dileia," Rocco murmured, his dark eyes shining with genuine affection. "I want you to manage the new charitable foundation I am establishing in my mother's name—to help women and families who have been mistreated and forgotten by this city. I want you to run it, with complete authority and my full support."
He stepped closer, his thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek.
"And if you will allow me," Rocco added softly, "I would like the chance to earn your heart. Not as your boss, but as a man who admires you deeply."
May you like
Dileia looked into Rocco's sincere, strong face. She saw no trace of the cold mafia boss the world spoke of; she saw only a good man who had protected her when no one else would.
"I will stay, Rocco," Dileia whispered, a beautiful, radiant smile illuminating her face. "I will stay."
