Chapter 2 - A Gathering of Vultures

The night of the 50th Anniversary Fontaine Gala arrived with a bitter November wind that swept across Lake Michigan. The Grand Ballroom of Chicago’s premier hotel was transformed into a vision of opulence: gold-trimmed crystal chandeliers, towering arrangements of white orchids, and two hundred of the city’s most powerful figures, from high-ranking politicians to elite industrialists.
Behind the scenes, in the hotel's staging room, Dileia was working tirelessly. She had been assigned to transport the private jewelry collection that Bianca intended to display and auction for charity during the event. Among the pieces was a rare 20-carat sapphire necklace worth over three million dollars—the crown jewel of the Sartori family heirlooms, which Bianca had brought specifically to showcase her status.
Dileia carefully placed the velvet boxes onto a silver cart. Her back ached, and her hands were cold, but she remained focused.
Suddenly, Bianca stepped into the room, accompanied by two heavy-set security guards who did not wear the official Fontaine uniform.
"Leave us," Bianca ordered the other staff members, who quickly hurried out, leaving Dileia alone with her and the guards.
"Is everything prepared, Miss Sartori?" Dileia asked guardedly, stepping back from the silver cart.
Bianca smiled—a cruel, triumphant expression that made Dileia’s blood run cold.
"Oh, everything is perfectly prepared, Dileia," Bianca murmured, walking over to the silver cart. She picked up the velvet box containing the multi-million-dollar sapphire necklace, looked at it for a moment, and then calmly slid it into her own hand-stitched silk handbag.
Dileia's eyes widened in shock. "Miss Sartori... what are you doing?"
"What am I doing?" Bianca laughed softly, stepping closer. "I am securing my future. Rocco is ruined. His ports are being seized tonight, his accounts are frozen, and he is about to be arrested for financial fraud. And as for you..."
Bianca reached out and suddenly slapped Dileia hard across the face. The shock sent Dileia stumbling back against the table.
Before Dileia could react, Bianca snatched a small silver compact mirror from the cart and shoved it violently into Dileia’s battered handbag hanging over her chair.
"Help! Security! Guards!" Bianca suddenly shrieked at the top of her lungs, tearing her own silk lace dress slightly at the shoulder and letting her hair fall into disarray.
The door burst open, and several guests and high-profile security personnel rushed into the room, startled by the screaming.
"She stole it!" Bianca sobbed hysterically, pointing a trembling finger at Dileia. "The Sartori Sapphire! My family's priceless necklace! I caught her putting it in her bag, and when I tried to stop her, she attacked me!"
Dileia stood frozen, her cheek burning, her heart pounding against her ribs. "No! That’s not true! I didn't touch it! She put it in her own bag!"
"Search her bag!" Bianca demanded, weeping tears of pure venom. "Search the thief!"
One of the guards stepped forward and roughly seized Dileia’s worn canvas handbag, dumping its contents onto the table. Along with a few crumpled bills and a worn photograph of her sister, the silver compact mirror tumbled out, followed by a duplicate velvet box—which, when opened, contained a fake replica of the sapphire necklace that Bianca had secretly planted hours earlier.
"Look!" Bianca cried out to the gathering crowd of influential onlookers. "She swapped it! She tried to steal the real sapphire and leave a fake!"
The crowd gasped in horror. Whispers spread like wildfire among the wealthy elite.
"How despicable!"
"A thieving maid taking advantage of her employers!"
"Call the police!"
Dileia looked around the circle of cold, judging faces. Tears threatened to spill from her eyes, but she bit her lip, refusing to give Bianca the satisfaction of seeing her break. "I am innocent," Dileia declared, her voice trembling but steady. "I have never stolen a single cent in my entire life!"
"Silence, you miserable creature!" Bianca shouted. She lunged forward, grabbing Dileia by her hair, yanking her head back, and dragging her out into the center of the grand ballroom before the entire assembly of two hundred high-society guests.
The ballroom fell dead silent as Bianca dragged Dileia to the center of the dance floor.
"Kneel down and confess, you thieving little maid!" Bianca’s voice cut through the crystal-lit ballroom, echoing off the high ceilings. Her manicured fingers twisted deeper into Dileia’s dark hair, forcing the 27-year-old housekeeper down to her knees before the horrified and fascinated audience. "Tell all these people how you stole from me! Tell them how you tried to rob the woman who fed you!"
Dileia was thin and exhausted, her plain gray dress covered in dust from a long day of hard labor. She clutched her worn handbag to her chest, kneeling on the cold marble floor. But she did not cry. She raised her chin, looking directly into Bianca’s vengeful eyes with quiet, unwavering dignity.
Bianca sneered, convinced of her absolute victory. She believed Rocco was ruined in his office, facing ruin and arrest. She believed Julius Cain was outside, waiting to secure the final takeover of the Fontaine ports.
Bianca grabbed a microphone from a nearby stage speaker, her voice booming throughout the massive ballroom.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Bianca shouted into the microphone. "Look at this wretched girl! This is what happens when you trust the lower class! She thought she could rob me while my fiancé, Rocco Fontaine, suffers the collapse of his business! But I have exposed her!"
May you like
She raised her hand, prepared to strike Dileia again to seal her humiliation.
Suddenly, the massive double oak doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a sound like thunder.
