Chapter 4 - Ashes of the Fallen

In the days following the explosive scene at the Chicago Hotel, the Sartori and Cain scandal dominated every newspaper headline and news channel across the nation.

"MAFIA EMPIRE UNTOUCHED: ROCCO FONTAINE EXPOSES FIANCÉE'S BETRAYAL AT CHARITY GALA" "HERITAGE AND DECEIT: JULIUS CAIN AND BIANCA SARTORI ARRESTED FOR MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD"

Julius Cain’s investment firm collapsed overnight under the weight of federal investigations triggered by the evidence Rocco had quietly provided to the authorities. The corrupt political ties Bianca had tried to leverage were severed instantly, as former allies scrambled to distance themselves from the disgraced socialite.

Locked inside a stark, cold cell at the Cook County Department of Corrections, Bianca Sartori suffered the reality of her new life. Her designer dresses were replaced by a rough orange jumpsuit; her manicured nails were clipped, and her former high-society friends refused to take her calls.

Inside the visitor room, separated by thick glass, Bianca sat waiting anxiously. The door opened, and she gasped with a sudden surge of hope, expecting her high-priced defense attorney.

Instead, Rocco Fontaine stepped into the room.

He looked impeccable, wearing a dark suit with a cashmere coat folded over his arm. He sat down calmly on the stool opposite her and picked up the phone.

Bianca snatched her receiver, her eyes bloodshot, her face pale and sunken. "Rocco! Rocco, please!" she begged, tears spilling down her face. "You came! You have to drop the charges! Please, I was manipulated by Julius! He threatened me! He made me do it!"

Rocco held the phone to his ear, listening to her desperate lies without a single flicker of emotion.

"You haven't changed, Bianca," Rocco said softly into the receiver. "Even behind bars, you offer nothing but poison and deceit."

"Rocco, I loved you!" Bianca sobbed, pressing her hand against the glass. "We were going to be married! You can't leave me in this place! Look at what they're doing to me!"

"You did this to yourself," Rocco replied, his tone devoid of pity. "You looked at my home, my life, and my trust, and you saw only leverage. You looked at an innocent woman who worked honestly to survive, and you tried to crush her beneath your heels simply because you could."

Bianca’s face twisted from panic into ugly rage. She slammed her hand against the glass. "That worthless maid?! You destroyed my life for a filthy, penniless servant?!"

Rocco’s eyes narrowed into dark steel. "Dileia Vance has more grace, dignity, and honor in her smallest finger than you have possessed in your entire lifetime. You judged her by the gray dress she wore, while completely blind to the rot inside your own soul."

He paused, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the small velvet box containing his father’s gold pocket watch. He held it up against the glass so she could see it clearly.

"I brought this to give to you on the day I realized who you truly were," Rocco said. "This watch represents unconditional trust and family honor. You were never worthy of it."

He slipped the box back into his pocket and stood up.

"Rocco! No! Don't walk away from me!" Bianca screamed into the phone, banging frantically against the reinforced glass. "Rocco! I am Bianca Sartori! You can't leave me here! ROCCO!"

Rocco hung up the phone without turning back. He walked out of the visitor room, leaving the echoes of her hysterical screams behind him forever.

Outside the prison gates, Tommy was waiting with the car. The rain was falling lightly over Chicago, washing away the dust of the city.

"Where to, Mr. Fontaine?" Tommy asked, opening the rear door.

Rocco looked up at the gray sky, feeling a profound sense of clarity he hadn't experienced in years. The betrayal was over. The deceit had been purged from his life.

"To the estate, Tommy," Rocco said gently. "It is time to make things right."
