Chapter 1 - The Trap Set in Shadows

Rocco Fontaine sat inside his dark, oak-paneled study as the voice from the receiver drifted into the silence. Bianca’s soft, mocking laugh echoed softly from the speaker of his phone, recorded forever.

“She saw me get into Julius’s car outside the hotel last Friday,” Bianca’s voice whispered on the tape. “She hasn't said anything yet, but she knows. A creature like that is a liability, Julius. I’m going to make sure she’s destroyed before she opens her mouth.”

Rocco clicked the phone off. The silence that followed was suffocating.

For months, he had believed Bianca Sartori was his sanctuary. He had trusted her enough to bring her into the inner sanctuary of the Fontaine family, intending to hand her his father’s gold watch—a symbol of sacred, unbreakable trust. But now, the blindfold had been ripped away. Bianca was not a gentle, loving bride; she was a cold, calculating predator conspiring with Julius Cain to dismantle his empire piece by piece. And worse, she was targeting an innocent, defenseless woman simply to protect her own lies.

Rocco picked up the antique wooden box. He flipped open the brass clasp, looking at the golden pocket watch resting against red velvet. Slowly, he closed the lid with a heavy, deliberate click.

He called his trusted right-hand man and driver, Tommy Riggs. Within minutes, the door to the study opened quietly, and Tommy stepped inside, his sharp eyes scanning his boss's calm, dangerous expression.

"Boss?" Tommy asked in a low voice. "You called?"

"Tommy," Rocco said, his voice as quiet as falling snow, yet laced with absolute authority. "Julius Cain believes he is about to inherit the Fontaine dockets. And Bianca believes she is about to become a very wealthy widow."

Tommy’s posture stiffened. "What are you saying, Mr. Fontaine?"

"They are moving against us," Rocco replied smoothly. "Starting today, we let them believe their plan is working. I want you to leak false financial reports to Cain's firm. Make it appear as though our port operations on the South Side are hemorrhaging money and deeply vulnerable to a hostile takeover. Let Cain think I am drowning in debt and desperate."

Tommy nodded slowly, a dark smile touching his lips. "And Miss Sartori?"

"We observe her," Rocco said. "Every call, every meeting, every transaction. But more importantly, I want eyes on Dileia Vance. Protect her from the shadows. Bianca intends to frame her or dispose of her to cover her tracks. Dileia must not be harmed."

"Understood, boss."

Over the next three weeks, Rocco played his role to perfection. He presented himself as a stressed, distracted man whose empire was falling apart. He sat at the dinner table with Bianca, watching her feign sympathy while secretly feeding information to Julius Cain. He watched as she offered him gentle caresses while subtly coaxing him to sign papers that would supposedly "restructure" his assets for safety. Rocco signed every document—after his legal team had silently modified every clause to ensure that any attempt to claim his property would trigger an immediate, legally binding trap.

Meanwhile, inside the grand estate, Bianca's cruelty toward Dileia intensified.

Every morning, Dileia arrived at the estate before dawn, scrubbing marble floors until her hands were raw and red. She knew Bianca was watching her, waiting for a reason to break her. Dileia had indeed seen Bianca getting into Julius Cain's luxury sedan at the hotel weeks ago, but she had kept her mouth shut. She was a poor, orphaned housekeeper with a sick younger sister to support; she could not afford to get caught in the dangerous games of the wealthy.

One rainy afternoon, as Dileia was polishing the crystal chandeliers in the main hallway, Bianca approached her.

"You're slacking, Dileia," Bianca sneered, tapping her expensive diamond ring against the glass coffee table. "Look at this dust. You're utterly useless."

"I am sorry, Miss Sartori," Dileia said softly, keeping her chin up and her gaze respectful. "I will clean it again immediately."

"Don't bother," Bianca hissed, stepping closer until she was inches from Dileia's face. "Your kind doesn't belong here. Enjoy your remaining days in this house, little maid. Because when I become the mistress of the Fontaine name, you will be thrown into the gutter where you belong."

Dileia felt a sharp pang in her heart, but she did not break. "I work honestly for my living, Miss Sartori. That is something no amount of money can buy."

Bianca's face contorted with rage, raising her hand as if to strike her, but a heavy, deliberate step resonated from the top of the staircase.

Rocco descended the stairs, clad in a immaculate black suit. His gaze swept over the scene, resting briefly on Dileia's trembling frame before shifting to Bianca.

"Is there a problem here, Bianca?" Rocco asked coolly.

Instantly, Bianca's expression melted into a sweet, worried smile. "Oh, Rocco! Darling, no, no problem at all. I was just telling Dileia how important it is that everything is perfect for our upcoming gala. You know how stressed I am about our future, especially with all the terrible news about the ports..."

She wrapped her arm around Rocco's, pressing herself against him. Rocco let her hold him, but his eyes locked onto Dileia's.

In that brief, quiet moment, Dileia saw something in Rocco's dark eyes that she had never seen before—not coldness, but an intense, silent promise of protection. It was a fleeting look, but it gave her the strength to bow her head and quietly walk away toward the kitchen.

As the days ticked down toward the grand anniversary gala at the Chicago Hotel, Bianca felt the power slipping into her hands. She believed Rocco was ruined, helpless, and completely blind to her betrayal. She began making arrangements with Julius Cain for the final stroke—a public humiliation that would leave Rocco bankrupt and Dileia imprisoned, ensuring her complete victory.

She did not know that every step she took was merely walking deeper into a cage Rocco had painstakingly constructed for her.
