Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary on the Sound

One year later.

The summer sun shone brightly over Puget Sound, painting the ocean in shimmering shades of liquid gold.

The Vance estate was no longer called "The Fortress of Sorrow" by the locals. It had earned a new nickname among the residents of Seattle: The Sanctuary on the Sound.

On the sprawling green lawn, a massive white marquee tent was decorated with thousands of white roses and blooming hydrangeas. Soft violin music drifted through the warm breeze.

Inside the tent, two hundred guests—including business leaders, local community members, and Elena’s grandmother sitting proudly in the front row wearing a beautiful lace dress—stood up as the music shifted to a joyful, triumphant march.

Walking down the aisle paved with white rose petals was Elena.

She looked radiant in an elegant A-line gown of ivory silk, her brown hair styled in intricate curls adorned with tiny white flowers. She carried a bouquet of lilies and blue hydrangeas.

Standing at the altar, looking impossibly handsome in a black tuxedo, was Julian. His grey eyes were shining with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness as he watched his bride walk toward him.

Standing beside Julian as his best man was three-year-old Toby, wearing a mini tuxedo and a bowtie, looking infinitely proud of himself.

Directly behind them were Leo and Lucas, now energetic two-year-olds, wearing matching suspenders and holding tiny baskets of flower petals—which they were currently dumping onto the floor in big, messy piles, laughing hysterically.

When Elena reached the altar, Julian took her hands into his own. His grip was warm, strong, and unwavering.

The officiant smiled, looking out at the gathered guests. “We are gathered here today to unite two families, two hearts, and one impossible miracle into a single home.”

After the vows were exchanged—vows filled with promises of love, laughter, and endless patience—Julian pulled Elena close.

“I love you, Elena,” Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“I love you, Julian,” she replied softly.

Julian leaned down and kissed her—a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their past, their present, and their future together forever.

The crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause.

As they turned toward their guests, holding hands, Leo and Lucas ran forward, wrapping their chubby arms around Elena’s legs.

“Mama!” Leo giggled loudly, using the word he had learned three months ago.

“Mama! Hold!” Lucas cheered, reaching up.

Julian smiled, reaching down to scoop Leo into his left arm, while Elena scooped up Lucas into her right. Toby grabbed both of their hands, beaming with pride.

Julian looked at his wife, at his three sons, and at the bright, beautiful world they had built out of the ashes of grief.

The fourteen nannies had seen a house full of noise and terror.
